Hi I live in England my family lineage includes Stanley's & Buckland's but also many more romany families, I Know that my Great-Great-Grandfather Tenett Buckland came to USA in 1886 and settled there with most of his family, the family went backwards and forwards many times to USA, His son Nelson Buckland ( my Great-Grandfather) came back to England and settled in Devonshire, where my Grandfather married Pheobe Stanley in 1908, her father was William Stanley son of Richard & Ellen Stanley Now in 1856 on the SS Kangaroo many Stanley's travelled ( totalled 33) from Liverpool to New York , there were 3 brother's & their families James & Unity Stanley Richard & Ellen Stanley & Thos & Betsey Stanley with them also went my Great-Great-Uncle Plato Buckland ( brother of Tenett) all these Stanley's had children who have married into Buckland family ( 1st cousins) I have a lot of information about family What I am trying to find out is this : anything about my BUCKLAND family, but also that in 1904 on Carpathia the family for the last time returned again to USA, now on this ship log they say they are all going to see Betsey Wells on a farm in Dayton Ohio , I know nothing about her only that she is either a daughter and sister to the Buckland family on ship. can anyone help me here? I can do look ups in Uk if anyone wants help

Our Historical Society Program this past Monday was about all the people buried at Woodland Cemetery and Matilda Stanley was one. I was looking around for more info about Matilda, the Queen, when I got home. Maybe the narrator of the program could help you, and give you the names of other family members buried there; they have a website and her name is Diane Pesut. She told us about the thousands of people who were notified and came to the stanley's funeral walking 9 miles from Troy in the rain wearing bright colors, including, who was it - Queen Victoria? ? Amazing. Dayton just has so much incredible history, and a lot of it is in Woodland Cemetery. Diane is very neat and would be thrilled to hear from a family member connected to the Stanley's. Her contact info is on the Woodland Cemetery website, Dayton, Ohio, or, my phone book says: Woodland Mausoleum Ofc., 118 Woodland Ave., Dayton, Ohio 45409, phone # 937-222-1431. I think it's great when people are reading sites like this to make the connections!

My grandmother, Bertha Buchert, was born in Portsmouth Ohio in 1875. Family tradition always said Grandmother was born a "Gypsy" and was taken by others to raise. I showed a photo of her to a professor from the University of Texas, Dr. Ian Hancock, a famous authority on Gypsies. He immediately identified my grandmother as a member of the Stanley Clan. I had not said she was from Ohio. Anyone have any other info for me?

I have posted some family tree information on the website www.werelate.org about the Stanley family and the Gypsies of the Miami Valley. See the finding guide for materials at the Dayton Metro Library: http://www.werelate.org/wiki/Gypsies_in_the_Miami_Valley_of_Ohio_Research_Guide .We Relate is a wiki site, which means that people can collaborate on a family tree online. Add your Stanley line to the material I have posted there, and correct any mistakes I may have made. This is a question we get fairly often at the library. Since there were so many children born to the family, quite a few descendants have done research at our library. Shawna Woodard Genealogy Librarian Dayton Metro Library

I am of Gypsy decedent: Blount and Worten is my Mother & Grandmother' names. I understand my Grandmother was born in Monks Corner, S. C.. I am at a lost as to were to start. I was told as a child, that her family came from Romani; and she was told that her people came from Egypt and were murder along with the Jews. Her families left along with the jews and she was told of how they help the Jews with different trades. She understands that some Gypsies stay in Israel. I don't know anymore than this. She and my Mother are deceased; they are buried in Waycross, Ga. in the Greenland cemetary. I have more relatives that are of Gypsy's race and are buried in Waycross.Any information would be greatly appreciated. WilleneGriffin@hotmail.com

This article appeared in the Dayton Daily News, May 10, 1931 When Dayton was the Home of the Gypsies By Howard Burba This article in places is incorrect where it states Mrs Stanley/Jefferies was daughter in law to Owen Stanley is not correct She was Amelia Stanley and married Thomas Jeffery/Jefferies her mother was Elizabeth Smith they all came from England, both Amelia & Thomas died in 1877 I am related to this family : Amelia was buried in the Stanley plot as are nearly all Stanley family, but it was because somehow Elizabeth Smith links to Owen Stanley, my theroy is she could be his sister ( not proved)or married to a brother of Owen and maybe that is why Amelia took surname of Stanley after her father Its possible Elizabeth remarried to a Smith? This would make Amelia Owen's niece either way I would really like to know if anyone can add to this

Sandy.... have you seen this? Not likely to be much more than this in the actual paper, considering how early it is, but I'll look if you want me to! I assume you likely haven't been to Woodland cemetery if you live in England? Has anyone sent you photos of the Stanley graves? Oh... this entry is from www.daytonmetrolibrary.org... searching for Stanley, or keyword = gypsy or gypsies turns up a lot of stuff... Obituary Search Results Name Newspaper Date Citation Note Aunt Mary Smith Dayton Daily Journal August 1, 1879 v. XVII, iss. 5 : pg. 4, col. 3 age: 112, gypsy, born England 1859, mother of Amelia Jeffery, 21 children, Woodland Cemetery

Hi Steve I have not yet been to USA ,but I am in contact with several of family linked to Stanley and others .I have seen photos of graves yes Regarding Elizabeth Smith,I have seen that article too and have this to add: can't remember where I found it I presume Dr Berger must be a reglious man not medical quotes from newspapers: Dr. Berger, speaking to the historical society, recalled some of the other gypsy funerals he had conducted. On Palm Sunday in 1877 he held a triple funeral. After a brief illness, Mrs. Amelia Jeffrey died at her farm home just north of Dayton. Her husband, Thomas, who was in perfect health, was so grief-stricken that he simply went to bed and died within two days. The family ordered two expensive caskets and the baby, whose birth was the cause of the mother's death, was laid beside her in the casket. 1879 Aug.1st Mrs. Mary Smith died at the age of 110 or perhaps even older. She had been born in England and lived there under the reigns of four different sovereigns: The first was George III and the last was Queen Victoria. This is what Dr Berger said about her:'No one who saw this venerable woman in her later years,' wrote Berger, could be disposed to doubt the fact of her extraordinary age, so deeply marked was she in all her lineaments by the hand of the great sculptor Time. I found a census record that shows family in Montgomery, Dayton, Ohio 1870 Thomas Jeffrey 40 b 1830 England Horse Dealer Amelia 35 b 1835 England William 14 b 1856 England Mary 12 b 1857 North Carolina Marilla 11 b 1859 Pennsylvania Leonard 7 b 1864 England Sampson 9 ½ b 1869 Tennessee Mary Smith 89 b 1781 England Lives with daughter If Mary gave correct date of birth she would have been only 98 when she died in 1879, but then they weren't known for being accurate with dates as they didn't really know when they were born as in years they liked to go by seasons : example "25 winters ago I was born" and had no need of getting a certificate back then,so it could be that she looked so old that no one really knew for sure. Again it seems abit far fetch to say 21 children ,but as I don't know much about her or her children I cannot say

I was asking before about Betsy Wells , I now know she was Betsy Buckland younger sister to my Grt Grand father Nelson Buckland but she also was married 1st to Levi Pearce/Pierce son of Lucy Jeffery daughter of Thomas Jeffery, but Amelia was not her mother, their mother was a Ganey(Jane) Wells Her brother Mark Jeffery again son of Thomas ,but not Amelia married Betsy sister Esther Buckland ( 3rd Marriage) 1st was to Algurrey Stanley daughter of Owen Stanley & Harriet Whorton when she died : Allgurrey( Gannie) Stanley wife of Mark Jefferies- funeral as found in New York Times A GYPSY QUEEN'S FUNERAL 1884 HONORS PAID TO THE DEAD QUEEN BY HER SUBJECTS DAYTON OHIO April 15th GANNIE JEFFERS Queen of the Gypsies in the United States died at GREENFIELD TENN on March 10th and was buried here today. Gypsies are encamped about to the number of 1,500 travelling by wagon from all points of the country. The Queen was embalmed and laid out in NASVILLE TENN. Immediately upon her death and was brought to this city fro interment in WOODLAND CEMETERY, where all the King & Queens of the gypsies are buried. The dead Queen reposed in a handsome Casket made of the finest wood, lined with the finest silks and satins and mounted with gold and jewels. The plot belonging to the gypsies is marked by a fine monument of granite shipped here from Greece. The funeral procession which composed entirely of Gypsies formed in the northern section of the city and marched to the southern extremity, where the Cemetery is situated. At the grave ropes were stretched around it , leaving an enclosure large enough for mourners to stand in . The crowds were very large and surged up against the rope. Boys and men sat on tombstones and filled trees and every place that could afford an opportunity of seeing what was going on. The funeral services were conducted by one of the leading PASTORS of the city. The grave was sunk about 10 feet. At the bottom was a box made of stone slabs and in this box the coffin was laid be side the deceased daughter. There were stifled sobs as the mourners marched about the grave and several broke out in loud cries as the coffin was lowered. At the conclusion of the clergyman's remarks the choir belonging to the officiating clergyman's church sang the SWEET BYE AND BYE and the services closed. The most affecting scene was when the great stone was about to be lifted by means of a derrick close at hand The sons and daughters of the Queen climbed down to the stone box to take their last farewells Their sobs and cries filled the air and were echoed by the mourners that stood on the brink of the grave. The sons and daughters threw themselves prostrate on the coffins and kissing the hard wood and it was only with great prevailing the stone lid was then put into position and the dirt thrown upon it. A monument will be erected over the grave. Published April 16th 18842nd he married his 1st cousin Jentie Harrison Jeffery her parents were Henry younger brother to Thomas & Phillis Stanley also a daughter of Owen & Harriet Stanley QUEEN OF THE GYPSIES THE WOMAN WHO DIED IN MISSISSSIPPI WAS NOT A GYPSY QUEEN DAYTON OHIO JAN 16th 1887 Much has been said in the newspapers during the past week concerning the “ Gypsy Queen “ who died in Mississippi 1887 and was sent here for burial , JENTIE JEFFREY HARRISON the woman was not en-fact the person who bears the title but was reported as the wife of MARK JEFFRY a member of the Stanley tribe, Mark was a widower when he left here according the best information of his friends and is doubt expressed as to the correctness of the dispatch, it is said that she gave birth to twins during the prevalence of a snow storm and the lack of proper attention and the severe and unusual weather caused the death of herself and the babies, the tents and wagons of the gypsies are comfortable in warm or moderate weather, but not constructed for snowstorms and low temperatures. About May the tribe returned and remain in this neighbourhood until the leaves begin to fall, meantime notice of the funeral of Jeffrey 's wife will be circulated and arrangements made for Christian burial, the Rev D A Berger of the untied Brethen Church is usually selected to preach a sermon and conduct religious exercises on such occasions The mourning is of the most demonstrative and intense character, the women shriek and carry on at a great rate and the men make a wailing noise that is very mournful, at the burial of Mrs Stanley The Queen several years ago great crowds attended Until a few years ago the Stanley tribe were quite prosperous owning several valuable farms near the city which they rented out through one misfortune after another however they lost about all they owned MISSOURI STANLEY who might be denominated THE PRINCESS being the only one who is at present well to do. Jentie died while delivering twins they did not survive either.

Sandy and Steve, I recently got in touch with Shawna at the DAyotn Library and shared with her what I had compiled on my direct Stanely line to add to the Stnaley file. I left contac tinformation with Shawna if anyone is interested. Shawna also has sent me copies of anything related to the Stanely Family as of last week. Shawna is great and is doing a great service by keeping whatever information shared in a single file. I hope by me sharing the information with the library it helps other researches for a start. For Sandy58 Hello Sandy, my maiden name was Stanley and I am originally from Devon. My great grandparents were James Stanley and Unity Stanley (nee Wells). I note with interest your reference to your grandmother Phoebe Stanley. As you mentioned, she was the daugher of William Stanley but I believe he was the son of James and Unity not Richard and Ellen. William was brother to my great grandfather Henry Stanley. Richard and James were brothers. I have details of both families from the 1881 Census, both in Devon. I also have a copy of the marriage certificate for your grandparents Jim (James) Buckland and Phoebe Stanley together with a newspaper article from the Paignton Western Guardian dated July 16th 1908. I don't know if you have a copy of the 1881 Census, but living with Richard and Ellen Stanley at the time were Pheobe Buckland 20 (their daughter, born in Somerset) and John Buckland 22 (son in law, born in America). Most likely related to you. Perhaps you could tell me where you obtained the passenger list from the SS Kangaroo. This is of interest to me as obviously it contains members of my family. As of yet, I have been unable to go back further than my great grandparents James and Unity. My email address is svr54@hotmail.co.uk if you want to get in touch.
