Anybody remember a bit Kirk used to do called something like, "Walter, the Friendly Poet Philosopher"? Walter would read a poem, very seriously at first in this great booming voice, but he'd never finish the poem because he'd be laughing hysterically at the end.

This would have been in the early 70s. I've often wondered if that bit was produced locally or was syndicated. I'm pretty sure Kirk didn't do Walter's voice, but it could have been one of the other guys at WING.

He did all the Walter the Friendly Poet and Philosopher bits at WSAI in Cincinnati in the 1960s before he came to WING. He brought the recordings with him and played them periodically, including in the early to mid 80s while I was working with him. I don't recall who did the voice of Walter.

Calhoun...Bigmo, I remember hearing Kirkie tell the joke probably 100 times "It's The Plumber".. It wasn't the jokes that Kirkie told that were so funny, It was his presentation. He was the best. And I laughed everytime.

I will always remember when he would call some place and put them on. Best was when he called Harah Arena (I think) and wanted to rent the auditorium to breed elephants. Said they needed a lot of room.

I remember the intro to Walter the Friendly Poet went something like, "Around the corner and UP YOUR BLOCK comes Walter the Friendly Poet!"

There will never be another Kirkie, he was the best.

Does anyone remember the litttle ditty - to the tune of "Winchester Cathedral" - that ended with the lyric "and drink all your gin"? I can't for the life of me remember any more of the words

AllenN71. I do remember that song with Kirkie.. I wonder if somewhere in this world is a recording or recordings of Kirkie's shows and/or skits. I would love to hear it again.

Calhoun, Steve Kirk was a member of the Dayton Ski Club until around the mid '90s when he retired, left the Miami Valley and then moved to Florida. I can ask around at the next club meeting if anyone has maintained contact with him.

I've posted this before ,but does anyone remember the joke Kirkie told about "It's The Plumber"? I heard him tell it at least 20 times, and I laughed everytime. He was the best.

If you search youtube for steve kirk dayton wing there are a couple things. One is a 45 minute interview with him that was on a local public access channel- I found it mentioned via a google search, tracked down the producers, convinced them to sell me a dvd, then uploaded it to youtube (crediting the creators of the program). It's pretty good, he even talks about bringing the Beatles to Cincinnati. Kirkie also did a comedy record consisting of several of his prank phone calls, you can find it on ebay occasionally. A few tracks are still pretty funny.

I believe the words were (there are gaps)
"You're listning to Kirkie/On WING radio-ho/(forgotten words ending in "show-ho)/(more forgotten words)/ So let him come i-hin / He'll keep you in stitches/And drink all your gin!/ A bodie oh doh, a bodie a doh, a bodie a do ho ho ho."

Best I can remember. Maybe that will jog someone's memory for the rest.

I remember Kirkie letting listeners on their way to work know if they had to be at work at 7 they had 5 minutes to make it. A few times I heard that and I was like 20 minutes away!

Last saw Steve a few years ago at a WING reunion. He has indeed moved to Florida, and is as funny as ever.

In the late 50's-early 60's WING was downtown in the TALBOT TOWER and the dj sat in a studio with a picture window and on Saturdays and after school we would stand around the window and try to harass the djs . Kirk never reacted to us but the mojo man [remember him?] left the studio and chased a friend and me down the street leaving dead air. He later got booted for fooling around with teenage girls by the way he worn a plnkish purple turban even in his off time
