Back in the 70s and before. Up through the 80s, there was a drug store called Carl Schmidt's. I think it was at 5th and Wilkinson? My dad made wine and for some odd reason he was able to get things for it at this drug store. Do I have the location right? I know its long gone. Haven't got around to checking old city directories to find out for sure.

I think that it was on the SE corner of Fifth and Ludlow. I could buy ether there to use as a solvent for quick setting glue for plastic models. The store stocked a lot of otherwise hard to find stuff, including wine and beer making supplies and surgical instruments, useful in model making.

I think it's one of the places my dad used to go to get -- guess what -- medicine. One or the other parent would get out the "Doctor Books" (home health care) and write down the stuff written there as something used for the whatever ailment and then go to the drug store to get it. Reportedly once he was told that if a doctor had actually prescribed the stuff the cost would be something like twice as much.

So, I'm still here in spite of of assorted illnesses.

When I was in high school (early 60's), a buddy and I decided to make black power (gunpowder) and needed potassium nitrate and sulfur. We went to Schmidts and bought large bottles of both, no questions asked. Try that today and you will probably end up talking to guys in suits and sunglasses!
