I could have sworn there was one in Centerville, where the Marion's Piazza is now - back in the 60's or 70's.

How far back do you want to go ? my grandfather used to be a fruit peddler and every morning he would take his wagon downtown on produce row and load up fo daily route. they sold from a horse drawn wagon in those days. sometimes my father used to go along and as a helper. everyday the founder of liberal markets used to pull up next to my grandfather and load his wagon with fruit. if memory serves me correctly his name was scherrer, schear or something like that. of course this was before I was born but according to my father this is how the founder of liberal got his start. as a fruit peddler. I used to shop with my mom at the small liberal on w 3rd street downtown by the arcade. in my teens I had a major crush on a cute little blonde cashier who worked at the liberal on salem ave next door to betty greenwoods supper club. I think her name was Cheryl Dereth. as fate would have it in the late 70s I was called to their distribution center as they were closing for good and were having some labor problems. I was a special policeman for a outfit called Nuckols and associates. we had 3 armed officers there around the clock. god bless the liberal markets and the memories they left all of us.

I remember the Liberal market at Forest Park Plaza. I guess that would be the Main street one. It was at one end of the plaza and Kroger was at the other end. They probably put each other out of business.

I seem to remember Liberal's closing as a result of employees trying to Unionize. Perhaps someone can confirm if this is true.

pie8me: there was labor tensions involved during the closing of the Liberal distribution center/warehouse. it's been a long time so I cant remember if it was union related or just because everyone was about to lose their jobs due to the closure.

According to the Wikipedia article about the Dayton Mall, there was a Liberals in the mall when it was first opened in 1970. I sure don't remember that.

The Liberal at 1040 Patterson Rd. is now a Goodwill Store. They also extended the building some years ago which now is occupied by a pizza place, video store and a paint store.

Liberals. I just know that we shopped there most and had the most Top Value Stamps. Never shopped at Kroger's cause Dad thought them too high. We did get S&H somewhere though, may have been Liberals but don't think so.

I was a cashier at the Liberals @ Forest Park Plaza in 1971 and at the one at Linden & Smithville. We were members of the Retail Clerks Union. I also worked at the Liberals at the corner of Wilmington Pike & Woodman Drive. It was only open for a short time. I worked in the Meat Dept.

I'm glad to see that someone other than me remembers that there was a Liberal Market in the Salem Mall. It was in the section of the mall that eventually was remodeled to become the JC Penney wing. I grew up near the mall, so I was pretty famililar with it. At an earlier age, I lived on Oaks Road, near the Schearbrook Farms (Liberal's beef supplier). We were surrounded by black angus cattle on one side, and whiteface on the other.

There was a Liberals on North Dixie in the late 1950s and early 60s. It was the first building of the North Plaza shopping center. It was last occupied by Odd (Big)Lots and now sits empty. Sherebrook Farms bought the old Parsons farm and built the Liberal there and then the shopping center was added. Many of my high school friends worked at the store.

When I was growing up on Sringfield St. my family always shopped the Liberal store on E. 3rd. Later when I lived on Boltin St. we shopped Airway Rd. store. When I married in 1965 we shopped Forest Park store. Moved to Belmont in 12/67 and shopped Wilmington patterson in Brietenstrater Shop. Center. Liberal's went bankrupt, they were one of the reasons Molers Dairy went out of business they only had to pay pennies on the dollars they owed to Molers and also to Miami Maid Bakery who eventually folded also. My husband worked for Miami Maid and for Pennington Bread over a number of years and serviced many of the stores. Liberals did go back into business as Shear's their family name and they also owned Shearbrook farms and raised their own Angus Beef. Great stores with great meat just poorly run business.

My father worked at Liberal Markets for over 25 years. From what I can remember, he was the dairy manager. His name was Dale Tipton. Did any of you who worked at Liberal work with him? His nickname at the store was Tippy.

The Schears knew they were going out of business. They should not have "stuck" all those small businesses. But that's the way they operated.
I am thankful we quit selling them meat so we didn't get "stuck". They were the hardest people you ever could deal with.

I always shopped at the Liberal on Linden Ave. which is now Freedom Foods. The main reason being that they gave Top Value Stamps and I would take them to the redemption center on Woodman Drive in back of the old Rikes Kettering Shopping Center. Some of the gas stations gave S&H Green Stamps that I saved, but I can't remember where I redeemed those. It must not have been too handy, because I threw a lot of those away when the business's stopped giving them.

I remember the Liberal Market at 101 Troy Street in the early 50's. My family used to go shopping there every week. We lived at 327 Troy Street. Closed the store to build the Interstate. The new Liberal was built on the 600 block of Troy Street across from the public library and Shachschneider's bakery.

Perry-

My parents shopped at the A&P first, then drove across Wilmington to the Liberal. My mom thought Liberal had better meat than A&P, plus by getting everything else at A&P first they knew how much money they had left for meat.

Miiames, I think you are right. Libral did give out "King Korn" stamps. At Least the one on Xenia Ave. did. I also remember the green TAX stamps you used to get. The schools would collect them for fundraising.

I dont know if anyone remembers but I knew Larry Schear. HE was a good friend. If I'm not mistaken he was killed at the Bank Lounge. I think it was sometime in the 70's.

Albers super markets were the main givers of S&H Green Stamps. Kroger gave Top Value Stamps and Liberal gave King Korn. Wonder where they got that name?Joey, was Larry the brother of Hyman and Gene? I think they raised some cattle out by the Dayton Airport.Liberal did have much better meat than A&P. We used to sell meat to them both.

Thought I would resurrect this post about Liberal stores. The one time Liberal market on Linden Ave is seeing another new life. It was a Freedom Foods, then a Save-A-Lot for quite some time after that. That store left some time ago. Don't know why. I though it was going to be yet another empty building in Dayton. But after watching some remodeling being done. Its going to be a Dollar General store. Not sure how it wild do. But at least it won't sit empty.

I lived near the Liberal in Belmont on Patterson Rd. I also use to go to the Liberal Market in downtown Dayton with my mother when I was a kid. That place was pretty small inside. I remember the dumb waiter/elevator they had, it always fascinated me.
