I remember that a llittle bit. Did they have faded Yellow Cab's,? or I may be confusing them with Fairborn Taxi.

I'm hanging in there, thanks for asking. Thats what I suspected, I had them confused with the old Fairborn Yellow. Seems like I recall a Oakwood Cab Co. (a legal one) operating with black cabs, or maybe that was the old Police cars? It's been too many decades ago.

...as recently as the very late fifties or early sixties, Moler's kept milk cows (probably not all of them) in a large lot north of the Smithville Road store.

pie8me wrote "The old White Tower on South Main and Patterson is now back open as the Brunch Club. They serve "Butterburgers" but I've not tried one so I don't know if they're the same."

Feeling a great sense of duty to the members of this board, I took it upon myself to sacrifice an hour out of my day and actually go to the Brunch Club and do the very important research of eating one of their Butter Burgers.

The results of my research: Although they advertise their Butter Burger as being 1/3 of a pound it actually seemed bigger than what other restaurants call 1/2 pound burgers. It was ginormous. Came with lettuce, onion, and buns grilled in butter. Totally delicious. However, not as buttery as I seem to remember from the White Tower days. That could just be a fluke of my memory. The platter I ordered came with fries (thick crinkle cut fries with just the right amount of crunch) and creamy cole slaw for $6.95. Plus 60 cents for cheese.

The place was packed at noon on a Saturday. That's highly unusual for what is more or less a downtown Dayton restaurant.

BTW, if anyone needs any further research on this or something similar, I'll once again sacrifice for the good of the forum. Please let me know...preferably before lunchtime tomorrow.

According to my 1962 city directory, the Cliff Cab Co. was located at 228 S Ludlow. That location now appears to be a vacant lot. Also, Bimini Bill's (212 S Ludlow) is now the A List Lounge. I don't know who owns it. Nothing stays the same. (Although, the Century Bar on Jefferson St is making a good stab at it.)

The White Tower on 3rd st is now a (I think) Thai food restaurant, the one on 5th is a BBQ joint, the one on south main is called The Brunch Club and pays homage to its predecessor with a darn fine butter burger.

Thanks, it's good to know that the world famous butterburger still lives on, at least in some form.

What year did the White Towers close down, does anybody remember?

If you still feel dedicated enough to do some research, perhaps you could taste test the Hasty Tasty Chicken that newsnot keeps talking about, I dont think he has ever made it out that way. from what I understand, it's on Linden Ave.

I went to Northridge in the 1950s. Their idea of a "field trip" was going to Borden's Dairy on Patterson 3 years in a row. I couldn't eat cottage cheese for many years.

Moler's was on Smithville and advertised "the dairy with the cows". They had a large area behind the store where the cows grazed, and which was changed into a subsidised housing complex by Kettering in the later 1970's or early 1980's. The streets to the South of Patterson Road in this area stop at the old Moler's Dairy farm and were never connected to streets in the new housing plat.

Schools took field trips to Moler's and the kids got a brass plated steel "cow bell", about an inch and a half tall.

Another dairy was located to the west side of Wilmington across from the WHIO studios. This was between what was then the A & P (now the Handyman) and the bowling alley. It was called the Shoemake dairy if I remember right. There used to be a dirt path from the A & P parking lot, trough the "back yard" of the dairy, and across a couple of vacant lots in the Patterson Park area that let people in Patterson Park go to the store without going out on Patterson or Wilmington. The vacant lots were finally used for housing around 1960. The land where the dairy was located was later used for a Friendly's restaurant and a Long John Silver's fish restaurant. These buildings have both been re-purposed over the years. This dairy apparently used milk brought in from farms in the area and did not have any cows themselves.

I have ended up with a Cliff Cab light off the top of one of the cabs. It is white with a green "CLIFF" on it. I understand the company was sold in 1991. I wonder if anyone has any photos of a cab, the cab station or can point me in the direction of some?

There is a building on the east side of Smithville south of Patterson Rd that is a UPS Store or was, that is the old Moler's Dairy Building where they sold mild and ice cream.

The diary property was what is Van Buren Apts and shopping center.

I remember the Cow to but not the location. That is where the local old time neighbors disagree. Some say the cow stood in front of building and others say the property went all the way to south of the Blockbusters building claiming that it stood on a piece of concrete on east side at Smithville & Wilmington.

32 years ago the huge piece of concrete was there and I saw it but now it is gone. My 1928 map shows the property open to the concrete site. Maybe it was moved when they sold the property to in front of the building. This I do not know.

Believe the White Tower on S Main was the one I went to for middle of the night supper when working third shift at NCR.Would love to be able to get that good of a burger today. Also was a Frisches at the corner of Brown and Stewart where we would frequent depending on how long we had to get there and back. Forget the name of the bowling alley and bar right down from NCR but would head there sometimes after getting off work on Friday mornings. That area of Dayton has totally changed and has become the property of UD and Miami Valley Hospital. Who would have ever thought all the old would be torn down and new built up.

Does anyone remember a White Tower between 1st and Monument on Main (229) in Dayton? I can only remember 3 locations: 3rd and Patterson, 5th and Patterson, and S. Main and Patterson.

An old phone book lists 6 total. Others listed that I don't recall were:
W. 1st at Ludlow,
W. 3rd and N. Wilkinson.

Were these 3 free-standing or spaces in larger buildings and carry-out only?

The White tower on N. Main north of the Flying Pizza was relocated to N. Main and Great Miami Blvd., in the early 70s. The one on W.3rd and Wilkinson was replace by the Federal Court house, if I remember correctly. My sister worked at the White Tower at S. Main and Patterson. I also remember the Cliff Cab Co., on Ludlow St., across from the Lee Hotel.

Supersix.... the Van Cleve White Tower was more modern looking than most of the others.... and I think the one out on North Main was sandwiched (excuse the pun) between two other buildings and didn't really stand on it's own. I'll see if I can locate my photographs of four others....

supersix..Used to hang out at the White Tower on main, It was on the west side of the street right there at the corner of the alley (or used to be alley) If you look where the old soldier is now standing,it was directly across from there and Cattycorner from the north end of the Biltmore. That alleyway that runs beside the Biltmore used to continue through (westbound) all the way to Perry street. That White Tower sat right on the corner of that alleyway and it could get a little rough in there late at night due to the bar crowds, especially on weekends.

SteveK..Thanks a lot for the old photo, I never would have guessed there was a White Tower there. Actually it reminds me of that little one that used to sit on the NW corner of 3rd and Wilkinson (across from the YWCA and the Clickety Clack.

Copson… I am sorry, but I have been off of the boards for a couple of years and I just noticed where you said you had sent me an email, that's an old email addy and it kept getting hacked so I closed it, I need to update with my new one. I remember Cliff cab when they had a bunch of cabs and were about the best little cab company in town. I knew a bunch of the drivers and a couple of dispatchers; sorry to hear they had gone so far downhill at the end. REALLY sorry that you guys incorporated them into Yellow, those green cabs were a part of Dayton history, but business is business. I remember the old Yellow cab offices being on the south side of West First street, a couple of blocks past the old Stratford House Hotel.

I remember ‘Dayton Liberty’ as Miami-Liberty (because those two companies had merged) Checker also had a pretty good sized fleet at one time, do you remember them? They were green also, not a vivid green like Cliff, but a weird kind of light colored olive and cream. I also remember a Black owned Taxi Company that served mainly West Dayton, I am not sure how many cabs they had, but I used to see them parked in front of the old Greyhound station; they were Blue and Black if memory serves with a little round blue roof light. I think they were called West End Cab or Westside Taxi, something like that.

Curious to know what era you were around Riverdale, sounds like we may know some of the same people. I lived on Babbitt and McDaniel and remember Russ’s when they were a small hole in the wall with a wooden floor. They sat almost on the corner of Main and McPherson next to that old dive bar. There used to be another small neighborhood grocery on the NE corner of Main and Riverdale Street in the basement below the Riverdale Apartments, if memory serves they closed not too long after Russ’s opened up their new store.

Do you remember Elmo and how he used to be all over the neighborhood like a wet blanket? I swear that man spent half of his shift every night trying to catch me out after curfew. A bunch of us used to sneak up to Russ’s late at night and if we seen Elmo sneaking around, we would all take off in different directions, this used to annoy Elmo to the point that he started cruising around with his headlights off . The headlights trick was also a big fail, because we could hear his brakes squeaking a block away. In retrospect I could never figure out why he didn’t just ignore us till we got where we were going and he could have just driven into the parking lot and had all of us trapped inside the store.

Elmo was a decent cop I guess, but he wasted too much time on little piddly little crap. He tried to accuse me of pulling the fire alarm on the corner pull box across from my house one evening; I never had much use for him after that. There were two other cops that I knew who played the headlights out trick more than normal and that was Jonesy and Lyle, (mainly Jones) Grossnickle normally had better sense unless he was trying to sneak up on someone who was actually committing a real crime. Jones and Carey would have made good partners, one loudmouth obnoxious grump and one smooth talking backstabber and both of them chasing kids on bicycles and writing jaywalking tickets. Sorry if either of these two were your Father, but they were my least favorites. Grossnickle jerked a knot in my tail a couple of times, but I fully deserved it and looking back he probably kept me out of a lot of hot water, I always respected him and he knew it..All for now.

I just wanted to reiterate that I have my email updated now and would love to chat about cop stuff and old Riverdale. I am very close to taking another hiatus myself, I will try not to stay gone so long this time, but if you happen to return to the boards during my absence you can now send me an email and I will receive it this time.

I drove a cab in college. Pretty sure it was Cliff. Job was so crappy that I only went out 7 times.
First time working the dispatcher gave me a hard time about what I turned in. The other dispatcher told his co-worker to call the police on me. Guess that bozo did not know the difference between civil and criminal law, which is probably why he worked there.
I remember the one dispatcher trying to sell me on the job when I applied. He said you can do well enough to pay your rent and buy a sandwich. Yeah, he said that, no kidding.
You had to pay gas, mileage, and a standard rental fee. I think I broke even on two shifts, meaning I made nothing after paying all my fees.
They always gave the newcomers the worst of their junk fleet. One time, I got up on route 35 and this "car" would not go. I put the accelerator all the way to floor and it got up to 35MPH.

jamesjohnson1970...You must have driven a bit later on, back in my era the drivers worked on a split, 60-40 I think. This lease stuff didn't start till sometime around the 70s. I remember the taxi squad used to look for cabs that had a passenger without the meter turned on, that was known as 'High Flagging' Meaning you took the passenger to their destination for a flat fee and stuck it in your pocket, cheating the company out of their percentage. Those old Rockwell meters had separate little number screens for everything and the clerk could read the meter and tell to the penny how much you had booked that day. Running without the meter on allowed you to fly under the radar and steal from the company. Getting caught meant a hefty fine by the city, possible loss of license and possibly even jail time since it was a violation of city ordinance.
