I cant seem to remember too much that went on in my era, I was wondering if anybody has any good stories about crimes that occured in Dayton. we had one thread started by "rfk61" titled A sad memory that got us remembering the murdered school teacher in kettering. and and a post from "rodat6" under the Winters bank thread reminding us of a mass shooting that took place in the old Winters Bank at 2nd and Main sts. that jogged our memories a bit. I was wondering how many more are out there floating around in the caverns of our minds. lets explore the underside of Dayton a bit.

Where I grew up, I didn't know what crime was. The closest thing to crime or being worried about it was when someone cut all of our christmas lights that we had outside on our trees. I was very sheltered from it I guess, living in our little suburban neighborhood. I always liken it to the tv show The Wonder Years.

rfk61: I missed out on a lot of that news myself. my dad used to talk about things sometimes and I would overhear him. along with your topic on the school teacher in kettering, thats what got me to wondering how many things of a sensational nature occured during our times that we simply tuned out.

dquartz: I tried to search for information on your mystery shooting at the Airtemp plant. I could find nothing, although my search was somewhat brief I am thinking maybe it could have been at a plant in another city. do you have any idea what year this took place ? it seems like somebody would remember this if it had taken place in Dayton.

dquartz: I just talked to my Dad. He was an Engineer at Airtemp at the time of the shooting. He told me the shooter was being hazed pretty severely and must have just snapped. He went home at lunch, got his gun came back and shot his tormentor. Dad said he walked past the area about 10 minutes after it happened, saw the crowd gathered but didn't know what had happened at the time, only finding out later when the Police arrived. He couldn't remember if the victim had died or not. It was a single victim, not a mass incedent.

CORVETTES6: You know what you are talking about, that was the exact area where it occured and the name is pretty close to being correct if not exact. I only know a few things about the son, he was a friend of my dads. I can close my eyes and picture the man but only knew him to speak to. my father used to tell me the story of how the father was killed and that the son was a fighter pilot in world war 2. but it seems like I remember my father telling me on the phone about 6 months before he passed away that the son had been killed the same exact way and in the same location as his father, only 30 some years later. I remember thinking how ironic the whole thing was and wondering if the same person or family of the same person was responsible for both deaths. maybe I am going crazy, me and my father used to talk a lot about the happenings of Dayton because I had been gone since the early 70s. corvette, didnt you say in another thread that you was 1st group of 66 ?

My family was involved in an infamous crime, but I'm not sure of the year (I wasn't born yet, I don't think). My uncle, Jimmy Denton, shot and killed his young daughter. He was trying to shoot my aunt, but she moved and the little girl was standing behind her. It was front page news in the Dayton Daily (I saw an old copy of the article years later, but was never quite brought up to speed).

pie8me/dquartz: Pie8me, your dad was right on the shooting. only one man died however it looks like a couple more were wounded. (dquartz thats where your idea of a mass shooting probably came into play). I was finally able to find something on this. the incident took place on july 9th 1965 (I was still in Dayton, dont understand how I forgot this)
A factory worker believed angered at reports that he would be laid off was held by Police Friday after a shooting spree which left another worker dead and two others wounded. held in the shooting is Alfred L, Davis, 24, of Dayton, an employee of the Chrysler Airtemp corp. division plant. the worker wounded fatally was Raymond E. Kiser. the other workers wounded were Earsell James, shot in the neck and in fair condition at the hospital, and George Woods wounded in the arm and treated in the plant medical room. a foreman, Wayne Miller, said Davis appeared to open fire with a revolver without provocation. there were reports at the plant that Davis had been informed he was to be laid off work, but plant officials have not confirmed this.

This was discussed briefly in the Winters bank thread and another place that I cant find. I was just able to find this today,so I am going to put it here in hopes the person who asked will see it. I posted it in the bank thread as well.
Jun 1, 1955 - A crazed gunman strode silently into two downtown Dayton banks today, shot and killed three persons including a former Notre Dame basketball star, and wounded five other persons before he was fatally cut down by police bullets. the suspect, a 47-year-old man killed three persons and wounded four others in two centrally located banks he was captured after three policemen, one off-duty, caught up to him and, shot him in the Winters Bank. this is all I have on it but at least we know the date.

Does anyone recall the execution-style murder of Lester Emoff, former owner of Emoff Furniture? He was abducted at his store on Salem Avenue, taken to a field in Jefferson Township and shot. That is how I recall the story. Very sad. May have been in the '80's.

I went to school with Emoff's grandson long long ago. The incident was in 1976 (maybe 1975). They essentially kidnapped Mr. Emoff and demanded money for his return. To prove they had him, they cut off one of his fingers and left it in a family mailbox. It has been so long ago that I don't remember all the details, but I think that they just executed him, as you say, while he pleaded for his life. Perhaps they took his finger after that. They had never planned on returning him once the ransom was paid, and I think that the person (s) responsible were given the death sentance. I wonder if he (they) are still in prison, waiting for execution? The whole thing is still sickening, all these years later.

The bar I remember across the street from Parkmoor was the Shroyer Inn.... I think it changed hands once or twice while I was hanging out there (mostly with the guys and gals who worked at Parkmoor). I don't recall the names of any of the owners at this point, and never heard any stories about the death of a previous owner that I recall. There's still a bar there today, I think.

TEW/Marck1957: It happened in september of 1975. Emoff was abducted after leaving 1 of his 3 furniture stores. the family gave in to the kidnappers demands and paid the $400,000 ransom, Lester Emoff was murdered anyway. he was found dead 3 days after the kidnapping. Albert Lee Scott Junior 40, was arrested. He had worked for Emoff and had served time in 2 Ohio prisons. the FBI agent in charge of the investigation was Thomas Kitchens. This is what I have on it, everybody please feel free to add anything that you may know, I am sure there is a lot more. if memory serves, this senseless crime garnered national attention at the time.

SteveK: By the time I was old enough to go into Bar's, thats pretty much how I remember the place as well. I think during the era that dquartz is speaking of, it may have been called Jerry's tavern. (not positive on this one) hopefully, sooner or later somebody who remembers the incident will chime in with the facts.

Here's more information on another suspect in the Emoff Kidnapp/Murder.
On September 26, 1975, Willis Leroy was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Lester Emoff, a Dayton area businessman. Leroy was tried by jury in the Court of Common Pleas of Hamilton County, Ohio, and convicted of aggravated murder (with the specification of kidnapping), kidnapping, and extortion. On February 23, 1977, Leroy was sentenced to life imprisonment for aggravated murder, seven to twenty-five years for kidnapping, and three to ten years for extortion, all sentences to be served consecutively.
