Anyone from kettering remember the stable off far hills across from where the library is today? Back then alot of the land where Fairmont is and the track was farmland and a few farm houses. I lived close and we would walk over to the stable and ride for a half hour or so. Old codger who worked and looked after the place name was Saul.He lived in a little room in the barn. You will find there today upscale condos. While on the subject of pre Fairmont, does anyone remember the time some troops camped in their tents and occupied that area and was in training for several weeks? May have been in mid 50's.There were dozens of kids in that neighborhood and remember alot of our activities including softball and using the big tree house came to a halt while they were there.

You bring back long lost memories. We used this facility in the 1960's as kids too. Yes, there was a stable there with riding trails down in the valley. There was a creek that came out from under the Lincoln Park/Far Hills intersection which ran through the riding area. By that time the Library, Kettering Times Building, Fairmont HS, a doctor's office (at Lincoln Park and Far Hills), etc. were complete across the street on the East side of Far Hills. The last lot to be developed on the East side of Far Hills was the south corner of Far Hills and Lincoln Park.

At one time the house from the corner of Lincoln Park and Shroyer (that was used the Christ Church for their minister) was scheduled to be moved to this location, but because of the creek, another location was found.

At the time the lot was considered "unusable" due to the creek, high water table, and unstable footing due to the creekbed. Later in the 1980's this was no longer cosidered a problem when the current condo/apartments were built there.

After the riding stable was torn down and the housing built, rain water that used to be able to soak into the ground was diverted to the storm sewers, and neighbors started reporting flooding in their basements and back yards when it rained heavily (there is a valley behind the houses on Far Hills between Stroop and Lincoln park). Aparently, the increased load on the storm sewers by the water from the driveways, parking lots, roofs, sidewalks, etc., was too much to be diverted into the storm sewer system, and backups were common. I don't know if these issues were ever resolved.

"Luv_my_Dayton" and "Perry401": I was a volunteer fireman in Kettering from '64 to '79, and I remember fighting a large barn fire on a Saturday afternoon, in the same vicinity described herein (on the west side of Far Hills, in the valley, south of Winding Way and north of the old Fairmont HS). That would have been late '66 or early '67. The barn was completely destroyed, but I don't remember if there were horses in it at that time.

As for the troops camping on the grounds of Fairmont HS, I believe that would have been summer time, late '50s, '60 at the latest. I moved to Kettering in '56, lived on Cushing Ave., one street north of the fields. All of us neighborhood kids spent a lot of time on the fringes of the field, watching the manouvers.

Hey olds88, can you believe I am still friends with Letty after all these years. Shes the one I used to go riding with. In her sophomore year she moved to Centerville where she had 2 of her own horses and we'd ride them along Far Hills before it was ever built up.
By the way JJC I lived on Lewiston for years and as you know there had to be a zazillion kids. No matter what age you were there would be some kids to play with. Best times of my life. Would love to know who you are as we all may have played soft ball or rode bikes together. Yes, I was a tomboy!!! That neighborhood is still a nice one.

My teenage friends mother used to drop us off there to ride, while she had choir practice at Far Hills Baptist Church. Another stable we went to to ride was on Kemp Rd, in Beavercreek.

luv my dayton - I rode there several times in the 50's. I also rode at King Tullis Riding Stable on Dayton Country Club property. I loved riding there. They had trails all through Hills and Dales in the woods. Wonderful memories.

If you go to this website: http://www.historicaerials.com/
You can look up Some views of the stables on Far Hills back from 1956. Their not the clearest of pictures but you can make it out. Alot of places from back then that are not around any longer. Interesting.

Sharon35 never there myself but sounds like a great place to
go riding. Actually never knew one was there but probably more costly than I could afford.
