The building at the Northwest corner of Far Hills and Rahn Rd is a Frank Lloyd Wright designed building. I'm pretty sure it is being used as a doctor's office now.

The Frank Lloyd office building near Centerville on Far Hills Ave. (and mentioned in a previous post), has a unique position in architectural history. As orignially designed, the building was to have three "legs" of wings off a central lobby. When built, the building was built with only two of the original legs or wings. The changes needed to consolidate the building were done by a local architect under the objections of Mr. Wright.

Later, in the 1990's an application was made to finally complete the building by adding the missing wing, but this was rejected by the local building department because it would change the original building -- the one that was not as Mr. Wright had intended. So what we see is not historical because it was what Frank Lloyd Wright had intended, but instead it is historical because it was built differently, and the local building permitting would not permit it to be completed according to the orginal plans. The Wright estate supported changing the building to reflect the original design, but the local historians didn't care -- they were only familiar with the abreviated building and had no intention of letting anyone change that -- even if it was not what had been originally designed.

My great grandfather was Frank L. Sutter, an architect who helped design a lot of the churches and houses in Dayton, including his own house which was on Wayne Avenue. His father, Leopold, was a stone mason and did stone work on the Dayton Public Library, the court house, Col Meade's residence, the Warren County jail. He also laid the stone work for Troy High School and the chapel at the National Soldier's Home.
