I can only remember Cincinnati Moeller and Elder being a dominant force in the 60s, but can't remember who used to dominate in Montgomery County? Anyone?
I know my old high school Wayne has produced some great teams and players over the years, with Braxton Miller being the latest player.
My son graduated from North Fort Myers High School in 2011, which is the same high school Deion Sanders went to.

Until 1961 Fairmont Dragons were about the top team. After that Fairmont East came into being, dividing up the school. Neither school dominated. Have no idea what their history has been since returning to one high school as having moved from Kettering don't keep up with football.

Jack,
Funny but in 72 I moved from Beavercreek and lived in N Ft Myers. LOTS of great ball players from the local schools, Dion, Greenwell, several others.
Greene Co not Montgomery back in 60's but one was Beavercreek and Xenia.
Funny story about Dion - well after he was famous, he was back in town visiting his mother and was arrested fishing in the lakes at the SW FL Airport without a license. Said he was catching bass for his mother.

Hugha,
I think Centerville used to be in the WOL with Wayne, along with the Fairmont schools and others.
I remember Centerville always being tough but it seems as though Wayne has started producing some good teams since 2000.
Is the WOL still in existence?

I remember a school we (Beavercreek) played in about 1963-4 (I believe that was an unbeaten season for us?) called Lemon-Monroe. Where in the world was that? I remember that game because it was their Homecoming and we killed them something like 60-0. Felt bad for them. We even had our big tackle (Mike Lane?) run for a touchdown.

Jack: I graduated '61 from Chaminade (CHS). My senior year ('60-'61) Chaminade defeated Fairmont West, who had an unbeaten string of 24 games. The following week they upset Springfield on Springfield's home turf.

They played Colonel White in the Dayton City championship; Chaminade lost "big". That was their final game in the city league. While in the league, they would play the second game of double-headers at Welcome Stadium; the first game usually saw two teams that had maybe 250-300 fans on each side. Regardless of who CHS played, CHS side of the stadium was packed. The gate $ would then have to be split amongst the four teams that played that evening.

There was no state-playoff schedule during that time, so it is hard to measure just how well CHS would have done against some of the other "powerhouses" in Ohio.

JJ: My uncle went to CWS and played football. He graduated, I'm guessing in the mid 60s. One of the big players on his team was a fellow named Matt Blair who went on to play for Iowa State and the Minnesota Vikings.

Turbo - I don't know if it's still called Lemon-Monroe, or if it's just Monroe Sr. High School, but it's located in Monroe, OH - south of Middletown, off OH-63, west of I-75, east of Americana Amusement Park (well...).

I didn't think that Fairmont split into East and West until the 1963-'64 school year. When my father graduated from Fairmont in 1963, it was just Fairmont- and then my mother graduated from Fairmont West in 1965.

As for the "old" WOL, that does make me feel sort of old, as it was still intact as was stated above when I graduated from Fairmont, in 1991.

For those of you still in Dayton, who dominates football today?

Jack - I no longer live in Dayton, but thanks to the internet, I still follow my alma mater, Trotwood-Madison. TM has played in four straight State Championship games, but they are not in the big school division. I'm sure people from Wayne would like to claim being the most dominant team in the Dayton area.

Kenny, I went to Wayne my freshman year, then transferred to Patterson Co-op.

I guess Wayne's biggest player to date, would be Braxton Miller the QB for OSU.

High school football season at Northmont was so much fun during the 1960s. Many Fridays started with a 15 minute pep session to finish the school day, followed later by pre-game activities, the football game, and finally culminated at the Parkmoor located at N. Main and Nottingham.
