Not sure if there's already a thread about Dayton hospitals. If so, I didn't see it. I'm interested in the history of the hospitals. Particularly St. Elizabeth's and Good Sam, but any info would be nice. Anybody have a preference? Which cafeteria has good food? Any former employees out there?

I'm not sure without looking it up, of course. but St. Elizabeth's was St. Elizabeth's in the beginning.

St. Anne's or (St. Ann's) was only the maternity wing of St. Elizabeth's.

In the mid-sixties, I remember one of my neighbors being at College Hill Hospital, located off Cornell Drive.

Good Samaritan Hospital was built in the 30s and was run by the Sisters Of Chairty, in Cincinnati.
I was employed at Good Samaritan Hospital from November, 1972 through July, 1987. Good Sam was a great place to work back then, but as time went by, big bussiness stepped in and things changed dramaticly.

Billd. What's your mother's name? I didn't attend any picnics at Lakeside, but did attend the ones at LeSourdesville (later became Americana Amusement Park?) and King's Island. My name is Marilyn Syx.

Anyone remember when delivering a baby your hospital stay was 7-10 days and the mother totally rested when she got home? Now your lucky to get an entire days stay. My first child born at St. E; second was Miami Valley and third at Kettering. All were decent stays and had no complaints. All of my regular surgeries were at Grandview and liked the staff. Over the years each hospital has become supersized with many having satellite hospitals.

Luv my dayton, I remember those days. You can thank the Medical Insurance Companies for the changes, and the "DRGs" (diagnostic related groups)
they developed. Its all about the $$$$ and not the patient needs.

My wife (Ex) came home 4 hours after giving birth to my youngest son back then (1984) because of insurance concerns against my better judgement, and I ended up taking her back to St. E because of complications.

I was born at Miami Valley in 1932, my Dad was a Doctor and did most of his work there. R. Dean Dooley, MD. I worked a few summers there as an Escort. I remember the night that Gentile, I think, has a picnic and all got food poisoning, what a mess that was. I dated a student nurse there in the late 40's, was also there in '50 when the snow hit, was there for a few days working. A lot of my life revolved around Miami Valley. Anyone remember the name of that restaurant heading down toward Brown Street, we ate there a lot.

There used to be, many years ago, a road off of Brown street that went up a hill, to the old hospital, The restaurant was on that street. I just checked the Google map, recognized nothing. Wyoming street was on one side. I see the hospital goes all the way to Brown street now, so that street is gone .... thanks for the info ....

OK, about halfway up that hill, toward the Nurses Dorm, there was a restaurant on the right ..... My Mom and I have walked that hill often while waiting for my Dad to finish with a patient. You went a little further made a left, down a hill, past the new building, to whatever that main street was that ran by the hospital. If you went to the right, back around the hospital, past the old OBGYN part, and I think the "old mans" geriatric ward was there also. There was a tunnel that ran from the new building under that street, up to the old building. Have walked that at night when working there, spooky after dark. Have pushed a body or two down that tunnel, and one night when I first started, carried a leg that had just been amputated. They thought it was funny. They handed me the towel wrapped leg, foot bobbling at one end and a gauze covered .... well you know. They were all laughing when I got there...

Joe, I can't place the little restaurant that you remember. I remember a little restaurant on the SE corner of Main and Wyoming across from the hospital and the Montgomery County Fairgrounds, but I certainly remember the tunnel under the MVH that you talk about. I spent about 5 years monoriting it. After the last of my kids entered high school, I took my first job at the hospital as housemother at the MVH School of Nursing's nurse residence 11pm-7am. One of my dutys was to monitor the tunnel and make sure an unauthorized person didn't enter. Another duty was to make rounds at 2:30am to make sure every student was in bed. Security would come over and relieve me. At Senior night, some of the seniors put a cadaver on a gurney outside the science lab to scare the older Mrs. Hoover who worked on my nights off. They thought that was so funny, but it didn't even faze her. I told them if they pulled such a stunt on me who was scared to death of dead people (still am), Security would find two cadavers when they checked. I traveled that tunnel many times. I remember when it was filled up with the iron lungs no longer needed that they were getting rid of. Also, I have been going through 83 years of paper work and I came across a wonderful little 113- page booklet called "What Great Matter A Little Fire Kindlith" published by MVH Public Relations in 1966 to celebrate the first 75 years of MVH which started with an idea of the Rev. Carl Mueller in 1890. The booklet was written by Janet Mardis, Fashion Editor at the time at The Dayton Daily News. A wonderful booklet with great photos through the years. I also went through the tunnel from Emergency in 1954 to deliver my middle son. Maternity was still over in the old building. I was put in a 10-bed ward. No private rooms back then! They had a mess there as they were getting ready to move into their new quarters in the women's old surgical building (also now gone.) What good memories your post evoked in me. I spent 32 years of my life as an employee at MVH.

Years ago, my mom gave me the actual invoice from her stay at the hospital in Cincinnati where I was born, 1943 (I believe it was Christ Hospital). She was there for 9 days - the total of the bill was $119 and some change. There was an itemized list that include things like bandages (5 cents, or there-abouts).

All five of my children were born at Kettering Memorial Hospital (now Kettering Medical Center) from 1966 to 1980. I believe my wife's stays were in the area of 3 days (??).

JJcofMAINE: In Ohio you stay in about 2 days after delivery. It depends somewhat on how you deliver the baby. Around 1990, Western Ohio Insurance was trying to boot you out the same day you delivered. Kinda like an out patient delivery. There was tons of complaints, and they dropped that idea.

The area that Good Sam sits on was originally owned by John Q. Sherman who lived in the mansion at the SE corner of Philadelphia and Seibenthaler. Lots of changes in hospital care over the years. In one of the halls at Good Sam, there is a hospital bill from the 40's for the delivery of a baby and it seems to me it was for a 9 day stay and the total was somewhere around $46.

I was born at St. Elizabeth in '54. It's sad to think it's gone now. Our doctor was Dr. Smith. I think his first name was Corwin.

I don't think any of the old Good Sam is left. They keep tearing down and putting up new buildings. I remember when the main entrance was on Fairview and Fairview went all the way to Salem.

I wonder if anyone remembers my sister-in law who was a nurse at St. Elizabeth. She graduated from Sinclair I believe in the early 80’s and worked at St. Elizabeth until it closed. At one time she was a surgical nurse and her name was Lisa.
