With all these post about Kil-Kare lately, is there anyone else on here that raced at Shelby Raceway (Pences before that) up near Lockington near Troy? For some reason I raced up there instead of Kil-Kare during 69-71. I have tried to find the remains of it on Google Earth but can't. Supposedly there is still part of the old strip there. I do remember you went N through Lockington then out through some fields to get there.

We raced there once in 1977. It was a little tough to find and we'd always heard about the big concrete slabs that lined the left side of the track as well as the short shut down area and the corn field at the end. It seems like we went a few rounds there but the chute didn't open on one pass and the car made it to the edge of the corn field but didn't go into it. We decided after that to stick to longer tracks!

I ordered the DVD with about 1 1/2 hours of photos of Kettlersville and Pence/Shelby on it. Fantastic tp see all of that again. Unfortunately I was looking for a pic of my car (lost all my pics in a 2000 house fire) but there wasn't one. What really brings tears to your eyes is the recent pics taken of Shelby Raceway. It is all dug up and the only recognizable thing is the old rusty walkway that went up and over the staging road from the pits to the tower seat. It's still there as well as about 100 feet of the staging area. Tugs at the heart to see it that way. Hooray for progress.

If you go to Google Earth and zoom in N of Lockington, OH, look for the intersection of Dawson/Fort Loramie Rd (runs North and South) where Lehman Rd goes off to the West. This is just N of the Lockington Reservoir. Go a couple hundred yards West on Lehman Rd till you see a black stripe just S of the road. that is the old footbridge I mentioned in previous post.

I am curious to know if this is the place where anyone could run their street car against each other.I remember going to a strip up north with my then boyfriend in the early 60's where he would race his 59 Chevy.

Probably, It was very relaxed. You could take just about anything up there and run it as long at it appeared to be safe. They used to have a class called Pure Stock that was for cars that were supposedly??? showroom stock. The tech guys weren't real swift and I got my 69 vette into Pro Stock with modifications and slicks. No wonder I always won. But they caught me once and threw me into A stock where I had to run against Billy Stepps Hemi Challenger. Goy my ... handed to me BUT that class got $50 for each trip down the track win or loose. Drew a buy run first time then got beat by Stepps car so I went home with $100 HA

We raced our 427 chevy biscayne there in 1966 the car was called BAMM-BAMM. We ran a stock did pretty well that year around the area. Ran that year at Indy Nationals. Got beat in third round by 65 Pont. that won the year before.

My sister had a boyfriend who raced a 63 Plymouth called Snoopy back in the late 60s at Shelby. He ran SSDA class. They always ended up racing a guy named Dallas Lunsford who had a Chevelle named The Red Baron. My sisters boyfriends name was Van "Tex" Hogan. Seems like he owned the car with another guy named Don but I don't remember Don's last name.

Thanks for the info tlturbo.....I thought Pences was the name of the place where we often went up north.
I don't think Joe ever won a race but he still loved the excitement of trying!

At some point, name was changed from Pence's to Shelby Raceway. Might have been when they became an IHRA track. I know that in the 69-71 era it had already been called Shelby for a while.

Ran my '65 Chevelle up there once or twice, around '68 or so. I have a few pictures of the starting line that I could post if there is any interest.
