I have Team photos of my Grandfathers. He played for Davis Sewing Machine Co. and Dayton Veterans guessing around 1908-1916 He also helped coach the Ducks in the 1930's any history buffs can tell me where I could donate them to, where they would'nt be lost or forgotten

You might think about giving Dayton History at Carrillon Park a call or an email and they might be able to guide you in the direction of what you should do with your historical photos. It may be an idea if nobody else has any suggestions for you.

What about visiting 5/3 field. Perhaps they might want to display them, showing off the history of Baseball in our area. Wouldnt hurt to ask.

I think there is a Dayton Baseball Hall of Fame, although I don't know where it is. When Mark Schlimmer had his sports talk show on WONE, he used to have a guest who talked about it. Last time I listened, former DDN sports writer Chick Ludwig was doing that radio show. You might consider calling him on the air to see if he or a listener can get you in touch with the local HoF. The show is, or at least was, on every weekday from 3-6pm.

Thanks for the ideas. My grandfather name was Tom {Spot} Dunlavey also a retired Dayton Police officer 1916-1942 He had done so much for Dayton, I don't want him to be forgotten. They lived on the east end in many places Boltin st. Sherman st. McClure St. Xenia Ave Hayes st. Is there any older folks out there remember the name. Someone that posts by the name syxpack said he or she are in their 80's. My Father would have been 89 this year. He worked in Dayton at Harris Graphics on Webster St. as a machinist.I was raised in Troy Ohio

Hi chuck48...

At your convenience, could you send an e-mail to either DPHFoundation@woh.rr.com or info@DaytonPoliceHistory.org. The e-mail address I have for you at peoplepc kicks back as "undeliverable". Thanks. Steve

Hi Chuck, I'm a "she" and I will be 84, just a few years younger than your grandfather. Your grandfather was the age of my two late brothers and though we grew up in the area of the streets in the east end of Dayton, that you mentioned I wasn't interested in sports and don't recall your grandfather's name. I do know that my cousin, Herbert Wantz was on the Dayton Ducks team in the '30's. He was always practicing in his backyard on Burkhardt next to Fry's Bar. I was knocked off my feet many times by his pitches. He always thought that was so funny. That's probably why I have to walk with a cane today. LOL. I work on genealogy and I say you are right in trying to keep your grandfather's good deeds alive. Right on, and I wish you much success in your endeavors to do this.

Hi Syxpack. I am glad you responded. This is a random act of kindness you posted about.I'm the youngest in my family and the only one interested in finding out anything about the past. I have not found anybody that knew my family when they lived in Dayton, they moved to Shelby county in 1942. My Dads name was Hank Dunlavey. If you E-mail, I will give you my address. I would like to talk more to you. Thanks Chuck

Chuck, I don't have your address, but you can email me at msyx@sbcglobal.net I found Thomas age 73 and his wife, Eva, age 72 living on Boltin Street and Thomas, Jr., age 49 and his wife Cora, age 43, living on St. Nicholas with their daughter, Ruth, age 17 and their son Charles, age 15. All this was in the 1940 census. Thomas, Jr. is a policeman, so I assume this is your grandfather and the older ones are your Great Grandparents. Would that be right? Was your father's given name Henry and his nickname Hank. If so, I could not find his name anywhere in Ohio in the 1940 census.

In the 1930 census my father's first cousin Clarence"Penny"Coleman was listed as a baseball player in Dayton. He lived with his extended family at 654 Carlisle Ave.in east Dayton.
I did some research and found him listed on the roster of the Dayton Aviators Minor League Baseball Team.
I couldn't find much information about this team and have no details!

Chuck- I'm also the youngest, and just about the only one in my family, who has an interest in our genealogy (except for one other person, who is a generation older than I am and has really done quite a bit with it- and I imagine I may take over all of it when I get a little bit older- I'm 40 now).

I mostly wanted to say that I think this thread in particular is a really great one- old information sought and found; personable, relatable things amongst people who regularly post on this board...right on, indeed.

I've really never followed baseball all that much- a little bit here and there, but not all that much. But my younger son, who is six, is starting to show some interest on his own. Maybe I'll start taking him to Dragons games next season, and use it as one of those teachable moments- I do that with my kids, every time we go downtown... :)

blue J- The people on the blog have been very kind and helpful. Thanks to all! I am not from Dayton so I contribute very little but can take much,I am on a quest( 20 yrs now) trying to dig up anything anywhere about recent family history my Parents, uncles, aunts that would know have all passed on. I would love to find someone that knew them, but as time goes on it will probably be unlikely

My grandson said he did a search on google putting in old Dayton ducks and found some pictures and the rosters. I did the same search and didn't work for me. Give it a try and see what comes up for you.

You might try the Carillon Park museum...They are now run by the Dayton Historical Society.
I have spoke with BRADY KRESS (PRESIDENT)about Dayton Triangles pro football concerning a original 1921 poster. He seemed quite interested in obtaining. He says they are setting up a sports unit right behind the Culps restaurant.
I bet they will be interested now in your donation. The phone number is 681 4100 cell or 293 2841 ext 104

I wonder if anyone is familiar with early Dayton amateur baseball and the name “Bill Lape”? He would have played probably in the early 1900’s.

John Carlson is researching my grandfathers baseball playing days. I have heard a few things that he played for a team called, Peerless. And they won the city championship of 1910. He played shortstop and had two doubles and scored three runs. Which I thought was pretty cool. Thank you for your post!
