Anybody on here remember a big Franks poultry place on Linden that is now a drive thru carry out? There were also several smaller shops around town and the one we had in our neighborhood was at the corner of my street and down a few doors from Fairmont bakery in Kettering. Another place mom would send us kids to get supper for the evening meal. Would buy a pile of chicken to fry and fresh butter for the warm bread. The only place I can still get fresh chicken and meat is Dots market on Waterviliet.

I remember Franks on Linden very well. I always got my fresh stewing chickens there as well as some chicken fat for my homemade noodles for Thanksgiving Day. After they closed, for a time I had to go across the bridge on West Third Street. They too eventually closed. I have never been able to duplicate the chicken and chicken fat and Thanksgiving dinner has never been the same.

We used to go to Frank's so my mom could get her "unlaid eggs" as she called them!I can't really remember what they tasted like but I can remember looking into the case and seeing the tub full of round yellow things.I can close my eyes and smell the raw chicken smell to this day!

The little yellow yolks were a favorite of us kids and mom would cook them in the broth when making chicken and noodles. Wonder why we can no longer get those?

luv~ I think they were a specialty of Frank's.If I remember correctly that was the only place to buy them.I think they sold the feet there too because they were used for making rich broth.
My mom was a farm girl who was raised in hard times so she used every part of whatever animal she had to cook.We were raised on beef heart, tongue, sweetbreads and such.

Frank's was a great show for a kid walking up Linden Ave. during hot weather. The processing plant left all the doors open for ventilation. I remember chickens with feathers still on hanging by their feet from a conveyer. Never saw the slaughter and bleeding though. The smell was pretty bad.

cilla46 Both my parents were of italian heritage and mom cooked with chicken feet all the time. Most of the time they were used for soup or spaghetti sauce but sometimes we would get a treat and she would bake a batch in the oven.

I worked for Frank's from about 1961 'til 1963 at the Franks store on Salem Ave. I did all the assorted cleanup jobs, mopped the floor, cleaned the windows, cleaned the chicken spit machine (gosh, I hated that), cut up chicken in the back room when a sale for certain parts was going on. I even drove the company delivery Chevrolet wagon to the other stores with all the salads that were made at the Salem store. I delivered to the Arcade store, and to the Third St. store that Syxpak was talking about. I also managed the catering affairs at corporate events with salads and fried chicken. This was all during High School. Franks was a busy place during the holidays. Thousands of turkeys. They also had good barbecue by the pint/quart. The store on Salem has been closed for years with the roof falling in. The building was finally torn down last year. Such a shame to see another of Dayton's icons bite the dust.

Yes, I remember Frank's on Linden Ave, in the late 50' and early 60's. I too can remember the smell from that place.
