Very exciting time from 1970 to 1974. When WING battled
WTUE radio . Old guys Vs. the Young guys !
WING - Steve Kirk, Lou Swanson, Don R. , Duke of Dayton,
Danny Clover ... Vs. Greg Mason, Sean McKay , Bill Struck,
Dave Michaels, Bawana Johnny..... Great Music , great contests on both stations. FM against AM Radio... it was
the best of times. Hara Arena concerts...Highschool dances.
I remember seeing Dave Michaels at a 7-Eleven on Wilmington
giving away WTUE t-shirts and the line of young kids went
around the Bldg. I also saw him at the Mouse That Roared
in Trotwood and on stage at Hara. WTUE played the long LP
cuts of hit records in Stereo -another factor that helped
kill 1410 WING. Bill Struck came to WONE-FM from WHIO radio
and programmed WTUE with the Format that killed WING in
1971 with the teen audience. It was a great time for radio
in Dayton , Ohio . What happened ?

Anyone else remember the WTUE Top 40 sheets that you could pick up where they sold 45's?

I've posted this link before, but my mom helps out with the Dayton Broadcaster's Hall of Fame. She's been to a couple of the events and met Steve Kirk and Nancy Cartwright. My father, Kurt Farmer, helped start the radio station at Kettering Fairmont. He also worked at WDAO and did engineering work for a couple other stations in town. I remember driving up into Calvary to check the transmitter tower at the top of the hill.

Forgot the link! http://www.daytonbroadcasthalloffame.com/

I used to win all kinds of things on the radio. I would always get in when they asked for caller #X. It was probably all the tinfoil in my head that interacted with the phone. (I was even paranoid as a kid).

Sometimes they sent you the prize, but sometimes you had to go down to the station and pick up your prize. Cheapskates!!

Nick was a friend of my Dad's at one time, back during his stint at WGIC in Xenia. They did some trading of records, 45s. I remember going with Dad to see Nick doing remotes from Ellis Ford in downtown Xenia.

Didn't Powers own a record store at one point?

This just emerged from the cobwebs of my minds reading these posts. Wasn't there a talk radio personality (local)named Brad Clay? What station was he on?

Speaking of memory jogging and radio personalities, I remember giving a party in the early seventies where there were a number of radio personalities present , including Wavi talk master, Bob Kwessel. who had a few too many and spent the night on my living room couch. Too, too funny. Actually still have that photograph of him on the couch the next morning. Always threatened him with that when he was still around...

I wonder if my dad was at that party. He worked at WAVI and WDAO in the 70's. Kurt Farmer. He was an engineer. I'd love to know if any of you remember him

For those that are still in the area, what FM stations are dominating today?

Seems I hear more country stations than anything else locally on FM. Thankfully I have satellite radio in my car.

This thread was interesting about some radio personalities a few months ago talking about the early competition between stations. Don’t all of those competing stations now belong to ClearChannel and all broadcast from the same location off of Fifth St. in the Oregon District? I drive by there occasionally and its a hoot to see all of their remote vans parked side-by-side…:)

The "other" big rock station? WVUD was the rock station till 76/77. I remember the week 104,7 came on the air. It was pretty exciting. Early on their bandwidth was pretty weak. Also the top 40 format was,nt really a challenge for VUD,s progressive album rock stuff the students had the freedom to blast, in 50,000 watt stereo. The 1st true stereo in the area. Then introducing dolby stereo WVUD was cutting edge on a national level. WTUE wisely hired UD grads Patty Spitler an Mike McConnell and adopted the model. UD suddenly changed the format in 76 I think. Very sad day in town I remember. Dayton,s radio an concert history is on par with anywhere in the country. WTUE became a worthy Rocker... For a long long time Thanks!!

Wasn't WVUD the first to broadcast in "quadraphonic" soumd? I remember buying 4 speakers for my stereo to hear all the different sounds.
