Thanks maxed out and driver62 and all the rest of you veterans, as well as all our young men and women who are still fighting, for your service to our country, As a person who watched my 2 brothers go off to fight in WWII and the horrors that haunted them for the rest of their lives, I know that freedom isn't free. I do genealogy and have found some of my ancestors had fought and died in the Civil War and one ancestor who served with George Washington at the Winter Encampment, The atrocities these men went through for us are unbelievable. We all owe them so much! My dad also served in WWI, although he spent most of his time in the service chasing the notorius Pancho Villas down in New Mexico. I will spend a great deal of my morning tomorrow putting remembrances on the memorials of my service relatives that I have on my Find-a-grave site. This is something I do every Veteran's Day.

maxed out.... Thank you very much sir.Your salute is returned. It would have been nice to have served when the folks back home supported the troops.
I'm sure glad my son served with the citizens support.I recall when he was home in '09 for 2 weeks of R&R. He was constantly on his computer, checking on his unit.He was here but his mind wasn't.We were watching t.v. one evening and he remarked,"Gee dad,the news spends 5 minutes talking about Linsey Lohan but less than a minute on what's happening in Iraq.
Thanks for your service too max.I thank all those who served and the relatives that of themGod bless ALL.
I apologize if any of this sounds negative. I certainly don't mean it in that manner. I think our experiences changed some of us forever.

Thanks to all our Vets, but especially the ones at WPAFB- without you I'd have never had such great childhood experiences. Etched in my memory is being about 5 years old, in the bright summertime on a backyard swingset with jets overhead, trying with all my might to swing as high as they were flying... Fast forward 45 years to Newport News, Va, where this weekend my own son served on the support crew for the christening of the Gerald R Ford. While my son and I are both civilians, those moments would not have existed without our military.

Have heard from ex military that a comraderie exists well after the return home. All of us I am sure had someone who has served. Many men didn't come home at all or were severely injured of which we are truly grateful for their service but also at great loss. For those who did return we are grateful for their service also and for carrying on their experiences through the stories they share. It takes special men and women to volunteer to serve our nation and at great risk.God bless each and every soul.

I've made some good friends in civilian life but my best friends are those I served with. It's one of those you had to be there things.

Now that people have had their say....

While I realize that Veterans Day is for all veterans and it's nice to have someone alive to hear the "Thank you" comments

1. I really don't think that fills the bill. "Thank you" for a couple of years of your life?

2. I really think it should be a day for taking special note of veterans disabled by something in combat. That arm or leg or whatever is never going to be replaced....

Just my humble opinion.

Now my say..... I served 4 years and I am very proud that I did my part making this country the best in the world. I did not give my life, I have 2 arms and 2 legs. Some are not as lucky. It does not take a loss of life or limbs to make a hero. Many that did make it home in one piece have problems that can't be seen. War atrocities have a tremendous affect on 18 year olds. I am proud to have served for this wonderful country as most veterans are...I salute all...And for those that have a different opinion.....So be it

I am EXTREMELY thankful for ALL who gave a portion of their life to serve this precious country.Yes,sadly some gave their life or limb in their service. There's a little diddy I recall that said,"ALL gave some,SOME gave ALL.No truer words were ever spoken.
I don't care if the service was entirely stateside or in a foreign land,EACH individual SERVED THEIR COUNTRY.The armed forces couldn't be effective without someone being somewhere for the country's needs.
Wounds can be extremely obvious, however many are not.
I will never judge one's service by the severity of the wounds I observe.
You see,I personally know a veteran that hasn't had peace in almost 45 years. There are wounds that aren't readily apparent and memories that never heal.God bless ALL who served.I personally thank ALL of you!

RG....I respect your opinion and your view. It's really difficult to explain some veterans thoughts and feelings on this topic.YES,I hate it that some of my buddies lost limbs, lives, and their chance at a "normal" life. You see,we ALL went in not knowing what our assignments would be or even if we would survive what they might be.
For many years, the only thanks vets from my era received was Veterans Day.I'm not whining, that's just the hand some got dealt.
RG,it's not a pleasant feeling to feel guilty for being alive. At least, that's what I hear.Let's unite and support all our veterans.I never want to contribute to anyones guilt. Thank you and God bless.
Every vet helped to secure our right to freely express what we're saying, here and now.

I served 12 years in the USAF of which 5 were overseas. As a Veteran I get medical care at the V.A. and a free meal on Veteran's Day. I don't think that's too much to ask for 12 years of my life. I'm proud of my service and I'd do it again. Just my .02.

I just saw a bumper sticker today that really hit home... I know Veterans Day is over, but I want to share. "Life has a certain flavor for those who have fought and risked all that the sheltered and protected can never experience"

Having lived through the disgust and hatred many people felt for the military during and after Vietnam, all I can say is how glad I am that today's service members do not have to go through that same experience. I am retired Army, and after 28 years of doing something I thought was worth doing and the "right" thing to do, I am proud to have served. If people say thanks, I say "my pleasure". If they don't, I hold no animosity. I would love for my children to have grown up in a world that doesn't know what an army is. They didn't. Now I'm hoping my grandchildren will have that option. Until that happens, I'll keep saying thanks to vets and honoring their memory on Veteran's Day.
