In the late 50s-early 60s, almost every time my mom and I went into Rike's we would see the same lady, usually on the first floor. She had to have been over 60, stooped over and wore heavy makeup and red, red lipstick. I think she had dark (dyed) hair and wore a hat but I'm not for sure. Also I had the impression that her clothes, though far from new, were very high-end.
We never saw her actually buying anything, just looking at the contents of the various display cases.
Mom and I jokingly called her the witch, but I'm sure she must have been a good witch.

Don't seem to remember her but do remember a blind womam and her seeing eye dog at the entrance of the arcade. Dayton as with all cities had their inhabitants they remember as there were many street vendors who sold newspapers flowers and food.We even had Rags who was a homeless man who would walk the street head down and when people shouted a greeting to him he would stick hand up quickly and then be gone.Alls he wanted was to be left alone but he was a curiosity to everyone else.Don't think we ever really learned much about him although articles had been in newspaper about him. For some reason Im thinking he was homeless by choice. May try to find something about him on this website.

If "rags" is the same person I'm thinking of, he often slept in the doorway of Rike's, along Main St. His feet were usually covered with several layers of "rags", or, maybe, thick socks.

Seems to me that when he passed away it was discovered that he actually had quite a wealth stashed away.
