I was looking at some basketball scores today and saw that Xavier beat Evanston, coming from behind in the last two minutes of the game. It reminded me of the Chaminade vs Toledo Libbey state final game in 1966. The drive up to Columbus seemed so long, and with just a few minutes left in the game I was not looking forward to the long drive back. Then Coach Turvene must have hit a nerve during that last time out because the team came out like gang-busters. The Gottschall twins, Kosins, Duffy.........what an amazing group. There was a short parade down Main Street over the weekend after the game. We prevailed on the pastor at Emmanuel to ring the church bells as the motorcade arrived at CHS. Anyone else have any memories of that championship?

Often overlooked game by the Belmont games it truly was one of the most exciting games in state history. The defense was the most amazing facit of the game and the comeback.I do not remember exactly but I believe CHS did not have a great year and every game in the tourney was close. The twins were great and at least one got a scholarship at UD nd went on to become a doctor.

Was at St. Johns Arena for that game was there with some friends one of whom was Terry Dunham who played for Chaminade a few years earlier and was one of the best players to come out of Chaminade. We used to play ball at Terrys house with the Gottchalls and Gary Arthur who was the center on that team. I think they all came from St. Anthony's parish. Sam Thornton was a starter on that team and I think Ted Weuben was the fifth. Oh and you mentioned the Belmont game Dunham was probably the key player to win that game who starred Don May and Bill Hosket who went on to play in the NBA.

I remember watching that game on T.V. I believe CHS was down 15 points at the start of the 4th qtr.

I had just gotten married the Oct. before, and my wife was just doing some "busy" work around the apartment, not paying much attention to the game. She wasn't really into sports that much.

However, hearing me screaming and hollering as the Eagles began their comeback, I suddenly realized she was sitting beside me on the couch. The next thing I knew, she was as loud as I was, cheering on the come-back-kids.

Fast-forward to the early 90's, I was at my desk at work in Maine. I got a sales call from a gentleman (don't even remember the product he was selling), and he introduced himself as (first name not remembered) Gottschall. I asked, "any relation to the twins from Dayton Chaminade?". I could hear him fall off his chair, and he asked how I could possibly know about them, living in Maine. It turned out that he was a cousin of the twins. It was an interesting few minutes of phone conversation.

One more "basketball" story about CHS/Belmont.

I used to venture to Wonderly Park, in Oakwood, to "play" (I use that term, lightly) basketball. That park had quite a rep for bringing in people of all levels of ability. During the summers, especially, there would be a slew of "teams", waiting to take on the winners of the previous game.

One summer, the one before Belmont's big season, I was among a group of 5 who had the misfortune of winning our game; the awaiting team-of-5 happened to be, for the most part, the starting-5 from that team - and this was the summer before their big season. It so happened that I drew Don May to guard; and he drew me to guard. I don't remember eating as many basketballs in my life, having them shoved back in my face, whether I was trying to shoot or pass. And as far as me guarding him, that was nothing short of a joke.

Needless to say, my team got to sit and watch the Belmont Boys play and win until it was too dark to play anymore.

Never knew why but that park and sometimes Shafor had a lot of ballers.Unlike New York there were little kids all over the place on swings etc.and adults going at it big time a few feet away.Inever heard any of any problems and the city was good about fixing nets. For awhile I believe they used steel nets and they did hold up better,

Speaking of basketball, can anyone remember in 1967 when the Dayton Flyers made it to the finals in the NCAA Tournament and lost to UCLA?

Who was the big name player for Dayton that year?

joey m,

Ted Weuben was not a starter on Chaminade's 1966 state championship team because he was just a freshman then (as was I) and freshmen were not allowed to play varsity ball back then. He was, however, a starter on Chaminade's 1970 state championship team, along with Terry Tyler, Dan Gerhardt, Stan Pfander and Paul Kurpiel. I think Ted played college ball at Creighton, Terry at Michigan, Dan at Ohio State, and Paul played varsity baseball at Ohio State. Stan might have gone to Indiana University, but I'm not positive about that.

Here is a copy of the UD team roster the year that they lost to UCLA in the 1967 Championship.

It doesn't list Finkle at all.
