It was a good way for a kid to learn responsability and put some. cash in their pockets and it worked well for most of the kids. Seems like sometime in the late 70's society changed some and made the job. Vvv more of a chore for the kids to make a fair amount. My child had a route and to get people to pay up was ridiculous. Id even try to do the collections and then they just quit answering the door. At some point in time they began using adults and you paid your bill directly to the newspaper. Lesson learned was you werent going to rip of the newspaper nor dictate where your paper was supposed to be placqu)?ed as now you most likely will find it in your driveway.

Used to carry DDN and hated the get ups on sunday.Papers were so thick it took three bags hanging on my bike.Could not peddel had to walk it.I sold extras also on Far hills.Tried to catch NCR people going home.Back then "blue laws"were in place and it was hard to buy papers anywhere.

Back when my daughter had a route some of the customers were intolerant and quite possibly had no life except for the paper. We had an emergency at our house and our carrier daughter was transported to the hospital which left me looking for a sub. Phone rings and it was the one customer who seemed to have no life letting me know her paper hadn't been delivered. Explained to her it would be delivered after we found a sub. Didn't show any interest in how my daughter was but just 'how long will it be before my paper is delivered'. Was very glad when my child no longer had that responsability.
