I know a lot of you have to remember the Dayton State Hospital, which is now renamed Ten Wilmington Place. Does anyone remember the stories about the patients there who were said to be dangerous and might escape and possibly hurt someone? I know this was overblown, so I don't believe them now, but as a kid, I remember how scared I was, walking by the property. Does anyone else have any memories of this?

Neat place, I remember a gold colored dome. My brother owned a bar down the street from it and we’d have to deal with some of the residents from the DSH from time to time; probably on some sort of release as opposed to escapees. Mostly harmless; but there was “Louie the Match”…who would set fire to trash cans up and down Watervliet……..
Then again, I had a buddy (deceased) whose brother was gunned down in the Stowaway…….as I recall it was some sort of senseless murder (oxymoron?) that may have been related to the DHC, but I’m a bit fuzzy on this one………..

Ive been around for many moons and never heard any hair raising stories except for rumors on things that happened on the inside. Until laws were changed a person could be dumped there for no apparent reason other than you were annoying. Real scarey stories surfaced when the place was empty and the sights and sounds of ghostlike beings of souls who had been there. Seems way back on these pages on this site there was a thread with many stories which you may find interesting of the asylum.

winterfritz. Your buddy that had a brother gunned at the Stowaway. When was that? Reason I ask is back in the 80s I was an EMT with Trotwood Rescue. When we picked up a rather violent mental patient that was let out of Dayton State on a weekend pass of some type. He walked to the bar across the street (the Stowaway I'm guessing) and how he somehow got a gun, and shot one or two people. Then he walked all the way to Trotwood barefoot in the winter where we came into contact with him. At the time, we didn't know what he was suppose to have done. We just knew he was a walkaway from there and were taking him back. Once we got there, There was LOTS of cops, detectives and deputies waiting for us. We ended up taking him up to the lockdown ward, max security. That was an experience! Padded cell doors with the little round windows. I kept looking straight ahead the whole time. Never once glanced over at any of the cell doors! Some unusual sounds came from behind them. Then the staff tells us how the only difference between them and the patients was that they were the ones with they keys! I could not get out of there soon enough! It was the middle of the night when we were there. Every possible horror movie scenario was playing out in my head. Before we went up to the ward. They took anything metal or any sharp object from us. Watches. Even tried to take my glasses! Once we got out there and saw the news later of what this guy was accused of doing. It was kind of eerie. That was my one experience with the place. And one was enough!

Gotta be the same incident Mark, as for the time??? Man, I couldn’t say. When it went down, my buddy and I weren’t in touch. It wasn’t until years after that I learned the victim was his brother; last name Hudson. Crazy stuff…..
I know of one guy in there from Yellow Springs who killed his father years ago…….Wally; I believe his name is………..relatively high profile case from the late 70’s or early 80’s……….

We lived on Gebhart when I was a kid. One morning we were getting ready for school and there was a lady running down the street, knocking on everyone's door, asking for help. Some doctors and nurses cornered her in the back yard across the street and took her back to the hospital. I never heard anything about who she was or what happened to her.

I ran cross country for Belmont High School and we were allowed to use part of the state hospital grounds for practice. Once in while, we would see someone wandering about, but I believe many of the stories had been repeated so often that they were considered fact.
