We will deal with neat short streets in Dayton. To start with let's use Wroe Street between Homewood and Five Oaks.

I would like to add another short street, only two blocks long in West Dayton. I would like to pose a question about that street to all of those Dayton History aficionados in the audience(That is, everyone but Curt. I’m sure he knows the answer). The street is Horace Street and what famous family member in Dayton History lived on that street?…...

Historybuff,
Nice pick for a neat short street. It has been rehabbed nicely. Some old houses torn down others redone. And it is close to the Wright Brothers Bicycle Shop.

Nice going MRC. You win 64 Silver Dollars. I thought it would take a lot longer. How did you happen to know that little bit of trivia? As a follow -on question and a lot of the old-timers will know this one; What show would give out 64 silver dollars for answers to a question? And it may have been a radio show before it became a TV staple…..

Butch: Lorin Wright was Orville Wright’s older brother. He worked with them in several capacities over the years. Horace Street, of course, was only a few blocks from the Wright Homestead.

newsnot. I just looked at Google maps and you're right. Its called Ohio St. Maybe its like how Brown St. is also called Erma Bombeck Way? I'm pretty sure the actual street sign there says "Tony Stien Way". Maybe its an honorary name and not an actual street name change. Like how Great Miami Blvd was changed to Edwin C? Or Western Ave got changed to James H. McGhee

There is a War Memorial right in front of Ohio Street. It was moved closer to Ohio street when route 75 was built through Dayton. They had to make Keowee Street wider and moved it in the late 50's. Tony Stine was a noted war hero and I believe he lived in Old North Dayton.

Radcliff is an excellent selection for this topic.

What's notable about Wroe Avenue besides a history of political agitation in non-partisan town?

There was a alley off of Radclifff that was very narrow and wound around and went back to Salem. It was a street legally and was named.I believe a court. Some one might have info on this sleeper street.

I have another short street; about two blocks long. Anderson-Goodrich St. or Ct., I’m not sure which. What I don’t know is who was Goodrich and who was Anderson. Maybe someone out there knows….

You can find several short (one block) streets in the Walnut Hills neighborhood. To name just a few there is Woodrow Terrace,Utah Court,Margaret St.,Gebhart St.,Lucerne Ave.,Eva St.,Gray St.,Mello Ave.,Jessie St.
I think the lay of the land may have dictated the length of some of the streets when the area was first developed.
I grew up there and know there are several more of those short streets throughout the area.

cilla46. Kind of ironic how Utah Ct. isn't actually a court of cul-de-sac like the name implies. It is a short street that runs between Wayne Ave and Gebhart St. Churchview Ln. comes in halfway down it and that street runs over to Edgar Ave. Kind of odd that its called a court.

mark1984~ Yes it is rather odd.I think that Woodrow Terrace is even stranger because it is really just an alley between Illinois Ave. and Edgar Ave.The alley behind our house on Illinois ended at Woodrow Terrace. If memory serves there were only five homes that actually faced front. One at the end of our alley, one on the opposite side closer to Illinois and three closer to Edgar on the same side.I remember that a boy named Johnny Thomas lived in the house closest to Edgar.

An itty bitty street...Wilbe St. More of an ally than a street. Ran behind the old Russ' Market on N Main.

Sorry I can't be more explicit on the location...but it's been almost 60 years since I lived there.

A couple of people were talking about Wroe St. I remember that because I dated a girl on that street. Her sister once changed her clothes in the back of my car, and it was all I could do to keep from looking in the mirror.
