Does anyone know what happened to the Schear brothers? They were second generation of the Liberal Markets family.

If its the Schears I knew Larry was murdered in a bar on Main St. Didn't know his brother but ran around with Larry and he was a great friend. Terrible loss!

I think the bar where Larry was shot was The Bank.

I never knew any of the Schear family but In the very late 1800s or early 1900s My Grandfather made his living from running neighborhood produce routes with a horse and wagon. Abe Schear (The original founder of Liberal Markets) apparently started the same way. He and my Grandfather used to load up their wagons at the same produce houses and they were casual friends. I once had an old tin type photo of my Grandfather and Abe posing together by one of their wagons. Just like the photo, this information was passed down to me from my Grandmother who passed away in the early 80s. The photo became lost over the years and it’s probably now sitting in a box on the shelf of an old antique store somewhere. I sure would like to have it back and I am sure the Schear family would like a copy of it too. Many people didn’t know it but the Schear family was involved in many other ventures besides Liberal Markets, at one time they were involved in everything from helicopters to motels and were particularly heavy in real estate holdings.

In the 60s there was a man by the name of Si Schear that owned a tavern that sat on the SE corner of First and Patterson, it was a big hangout for the Delco crowd. I don't think he was related to the Schears of Liberal fame.

Riverdale,
The only brothers I knew of were Gene and Hyman but I think there were more. They had a farm up by the Dayton Airport where they raised Black Angus cattle for use in their stores. They were years ahead with Black Angus. I think Hyman ended up in Florida but I am sure there are more descendents around Dayton.I think Gene was the head hauncho.

newsnot.. Gene was the second head honcho, Abe was the first. Gene was however the one that done all of the expanding and made Liberal what it once was in its heyday. The last I heard Gene retired and moved to Florida and someone said he started/bought a golf course and a bunch of houses. That was a long time ago, I am sure Gene has long since departed this ol' earth, he would probably be at least a hundred years old by now.

Hey Riverdate rat, my aunt and uncle were friends with the Schears (Si and Mary). They used to party together in the good ol days. They were friends until both Si and Mary died. My aunt and uncle used to talk about the parties the Schears would throw...Some place I or my cousin have a picture of the 4 of them. Seems like I've seen it in some of the old albums.

Daytongirl01... Forgot all about Mary, that was his wife's name for sure, That's what I love about this blog, no matter what you post, it seems like sooner or later somebody will know what you are talking about. I ran by their old Tavern (on Google street view) and it's still sitting there just the same as I remember it. Looks like there is another place in there now, called the Canal Street Tavern. I remember Si and Mary always ran a respectable place and never stood for any nonsense, they had awesome food (I loved their meat loaf sandwiches) and the Delco crowd loved Si and Mary because they knew how to treat people. There was also a girl who worked there named Millie. I am happy the old building has escaped the wrecking ball.

Hi Riverdale, glad I could help....my 91 year mom just told me that she believes Mary and Si had two boys, but she couldn't remember their names. She also said she believes at one time for a short time, Mary and Si lived either on Riverview or just off Riverview on the West Side. Not sure about that info though,,she may not be remembering correctly. My aunt's married name was Nevin, her maiden name was Poppa.

If you're familiar with the Delco group, would you happen to know Mike Jacobs, or his wife Irma? They both worked at Delco for years, and years, retired so many years ago, both gone now.

Daytongirl01...You are truly blessed to still have your mom with you and remembering things, even if her memory isn't quite as sharp as it used to be, those memories are pure gold. I'm sorry, I didn't know Mike or Irma. About the only people from Delco that I remember is the man who took care of the newspaper racks around there and sold papers by the front Entrances, he drove a station wagon and his name was Elmer Polk. I also recall a man by the Name of John Gower who used to work there, someone told me he became ill and passed away in the old Stillwater sanatorium, so I'm assuming it must have been from Tuberculosis.

As a child (ages 2-8), I used to live on Oakes Road, north of Trotwood. In those days (late-60's, early-70's), there were a number of Schearbrook Farms on Oakes Road (where Moss Creek Golf Club is now) with their Black Angus beef on the hoof, so any topic about the Schears arouses my interest.

According to a Dayton Daily News article in November 2011, Eugene Schear died in Florida at age 94, the last of his family generation (one of six brothers and two sisters). The article describes his connection to Schearbrook Farms (including farms in various other States and countries), Liberal Markets, and the Schearbrooke Estates golf club in Palm Beach County, FL.

According to a Supermarket News article in December 1997, Gene's brother Herbert "Orby" Schear died in Dayton at age 89. That article indicated that he was one of the five Schear brothers that operated Liberal Markets.
