During the early sixties my brothers and I wanted to go camping but because of our family situation we just did not have the means or the willing parents. So to overcome this we would beg our neighbors to allow us to "camp out" in their cars. The station wagons were the best! We would take our blankets and pillows and snacks out to the car, roll down the windows and shoot the breeze until we passed out. That was camping out for this inner city lad. Any of you with creative ways of camping out in the city?

Nothing creative here and looks like non of us could compete with you and your brothers. That story is one for the books and so nostalgic. Station wagons were pretty roomy.

Somewhere around spring of '77 or '78, I went with my son on a weekend Boy Scout campout. The location was NE of Dayton, but I can't remember where. I just remember that I allowed my son to choose the "overnight accommodations" - either inside a fairly well-equipped "bunk house", or outside, under a picnic shelter, with cement floor. He chose the latter. It got very cool overnight, and extremely uncomfortable. The following year, we returned to the same location. This time, I equipped my '76 Ford Country Squire station wagon with a mattress pad for the wagon. The second and third row seats were all down, so it made for a very comfortable bed. There was no discussion as to where DAD would sleep - my son chose the same.

That brings back memories. I used to know a kid in Riverdale (speedy) that had an old car that he used for the same thing. I am thinking this car camping may have been a bit more popular than one might imagine.

My Boy Scout troop was very regular about formal camp outs. We camped at Englewood Dam, and a Boy Scout camp in Yellow Springs, I think. As an individual, I camped in the backyard with my tent. It would sleep 4 tightly and 2 comfortably. Many nights I slept out there. My parents would let me go out pretty much when I wanted although I am sure Mom checked on me more than I know. I also had some friends over for a sleep out. The backyard was fairly secluded so, not much danger. Even being secluded as it was today, I don't think my parents would be as lenient.

Not really camping but as close as I got as a child: my brothers and I would take two of Dad's woolen army blankets and clothes pin them to the clothes line in the back yard. Then we would pound clothes pins into the corners as tent pegs. Mostly stayed inside and read during the day but we slept out all night once or twice. We made bon fires and roasted hot dogs and marshmallows and pretended we were really camping out.

There was a Boy Scout camping area known as Apollo Park just off of what is now Col. Glenn Highway (then Airway Road) in the 1950’s and ‘60’s……was just about right behind where the Airway Inn was located…..can’t seem to find out anything about it….
By the time I was exploring this area in the late 60’s the Boy Scouts were gone and Sturgill’s Junk Yard had encroached on the land………would like to know if anyone has any information pertaining to this place……

winterfritz, I remember Apollo Park. When I was in the Explorers, we used to go on joint campouts, with Explorer Post 523 and 521. Oiur post was 520. I believe it was 523 who met at Apollo Park. They camped there and the building they met in was an old
"quansin hut"(sp?). The kids were all from military families. We had great times. I believe the park was taken out when they widened Col. Glenn Hgwy.

That's right Camp Birch. We had a dining hall where we would sing songs after dinner and all the camp activities. There would be a big campfire and each troop would do a skit. The director/caretaker of the camp was a real crabby man. Didn't like kids. Go figure.
