I can remember those days like it was yesterday. Today when I look back it was not all that bad. But when I was there it seem like it was the worstt place on earth. Iwas looking @ tv watching a special about Tupac, and they showed Roger Troutman. I was telling my friend about how I knew him. That's when all the memories came up.

Believe that places such as Shawn acres were a blessing to many and helped to establish good futures for those leaving at 18. One such person was Dave Thomas founder of Wendys. Values and ethics were part of the education of children there and many grew up to become responsible adults. Am sure that for a lot of kids it was traumatic at first even if homelife for them was not so great. The change was a major adjustment to be made. Thankfully there still is a Shawn acres to fill the void of a child's loss of their family.

I went to Shiloh Elementary School during the 1950s(K-3)and a few of the kids there lived at the orphanage.
Recently I was attempting to learn how to make slide shows (for DVDs) and my first contained mostly photos that I had taken of local landmarks or places that meant something to me during my "formative" years growing up in the Shiloh and later Englewood areas. I was lucky enough to take a few exterior shots of Shawen Acres when many of the buildings still existed. It amazes me how many of the kids who lived there and comment in this chat room about their warm memories of the place.

Past by there recently and all the old gone and new built. I fortunately had a wonderful childhood but sadly the only thing weird for many of us way back was when we were obnoxious mom would make her fake phone call to the orphanage and set terror into us. Got us busy doing what we were asked to do or stop our bad behavior. Not funny. As my sister and I grew up we now are able to laugh about it. Kind of a mean thing to do but whatever works!

Steve, Roger troutman and his gang are not reflective of the true spirit of Shawen Acres or any other legitimate orphanage. It's a shame you were exposed to such maylay. I left there in 1968 and escaped the chaos. I'm guessing we all know how it turned out for the Troutman Bros.

Mike H; I’m not familiar with the Troutman Gang. Were they similar to the Stepp Gang or the alleged “Brown Street Gang. Would you mind expounding on the subject? What was their connection to Shawen Acres?

The Troutmans were two brothers in the recording business who somehow became associated with the running of Shawen Acres and so abused and corrupted the children there that the place was closed down. In the end, one killed the other and then himself. Without particlulars, that's the jest of the story. I have first hand stories of girls who were there in that final era.
