I only vaguely remember the name. Was that the one on the northwest corner of Fourth & Main?

Ghost, I believe the store on the NW corner of 4th & Main was H. L. Green's. It was a part of McCrory's chain: McCrory-McClellan-Green. I can remember the price stickers had "MMG" on them.

old4d,

I think you are right that for a while that dime store at Fourth & Main was Green's, but it seems like before that it was Grant's (long time ago).

And, if I can drift off-topic here, have you looked over the "missing" housing on the West Side via a satellite map? For a while an aunt, uncle and cousin of mine lived on a corner of Farley and Second St. I tried to locate that house a while ago and couldn't find it.

Sorry, Ghostie! I moved here from PA in 1960, I forget sometimes that I'm not a REAL Daytonian, I just feel like one, lol. Were the Grant's all gone by then? I don't remember any.

I remember back in the late 40s and early 50s it seems there was a Grants thee somewhere I had to go past it and went in a lot. Seems they had a lunch counter and lots of neat stuff like the blue and white vase I bought Mon for Christmas one year. It had a lady on it. I thought it was the Virgin Mary. (Wrong!).
I also bought my little vase with the growing stones that made neat ling colored spikes in the water. I never had the nerve to buy the instant fish.
I really miss those days. Would love to walk those streets again and feel safe.

There was a Grant's at the shopping center on N. Dixie near the Living Room up thru at least the mid-60s.

The closest I have been to something similar to these stores was when in Old San Juan Puerto Rico. Took me back in time. That was back in mid 80's and things may have changed since then.Love the smaller cities where charm and quaintness still remain. Locally we do have some that fall into this catagory.

Wasn't there a Ben Franklin store similar to Grant's? Don't know if there were any in Dayton or not...and Kresge's?

The only Ben Franklin store in the Dayton area was in Miamisburg if I remember correctly.

There was a W.T. Grant in Fairborn on Kaufman Ave. As I recall it was very similar to Woolworths.

There was a Ben Franklin store in Brookville, if you consider that "Dayton area".

Billd - I grew up near there, but I don't remember the location of the Ben Franklin store. As noted in another thread on this blog (Salem Ave. Long Gone), we were having trouble identifying the store that was at the location that eventually became the Best Buy store - was that the Ben Franklin store, or something else?
