RE: Stomps-Burkhardt Chairs

The company was founded in 1859 by Gustave Stomps and
his brother Joseph in Dayton. There were various names. G. Stomps & Brother was later changed to Stomps-Burkhardt Company in 1890. Founded by my great-grandfather.
Burkhardt came on board as an apprentice, married Gustave's
oldest daughter, became President in 1890. Company folded
in 1928.

If you send me a photo of your chair, I'll
try to find it in the catalogs I have.

Wilhelmina,

Is there any way I could obtain a copy of the product catalog for your Company? I am trying to get a replica made of a chair my wife had 35 years ago and had to leave when she left home. If nothing else does your company still make the old patterns?

This message is for Wilhemina. My Grandmother was Evelyn Stomps. Daughter of Joseph Bernard Stomps who was son of Joseph Stomps. I believe we are related. I also have a catalog of the different chairs that were produced but not a whole lot more info. Could you contact me at dbenbenek@comcast.net so that we can talk about our inter-twined ancestry. Csn't wait to talk.
Thanks,
Donna

I am trying to complete a set of chairs for my dining room. All of my side chairs are Stomps, but I would like to buy some more ornate chairs to be my head chairs. I want something Stomps. I would prefer the Roman-style. But, I am willing to look at anything fancy. Please email me at Quixote511@aol.com

I have a rocking chair that was my mother in-laws. It is a small chair and I beleive it might be a childs rocker.
On the bottom of the chair is the "The Stomps-Burkhardt Co.
Dayton, Ohio USA and a number 1767/45. Can you tell me what it might be worth? It is in very good condition.
Thanks so much.

Catherine Stomps was my great grandmother. The research I'm doing about an old house has me aware of more than before about Dayton's history. Lars Olstrom of bargain john's antiques from eBay may know more about the value of some of your pieces. Wilhelmina Foerenbach was a family name way back . What a coincidence.
John Thomas of Thomas Peters and Company, circa 1861, I think had something to do with building a particular house and I was trying to find out from pictures or some other house he built what the porches and balcony may previously been .

A neighbor threw away 2 Stomps-Burkharkt chairs and I took them home and cleaned them up. The chairs need to be refinished but otherwise good condition. They are dinning room chairs with one having arms. They also have leather or naghude seats. Backs are shaped like a fiddle and front legs are curved. I'm wondering how old they are and also the value. Write to JoAnnFi@aol.com

Yes, Hello and I have a Stomps Burhardt chair with the maniacally smiling lion on the back rest as well as skinny lions or griffins on the 2 posts of the chair. It is in excellent condition and doesn't seem to have been ever re-finished as far as I can tell. The Stomps stamp is very legible as well on the bottom. I bought it at an Estate Sale about 4 years ago but was told by another dealer buying furniture at the sale that it was worth way more than what I paid for it but didn't have specifics.
Do you have any advise as to what I should do to find out it's worth?? I can also email pix of it.

Thanks!

Hello,

I have a set of 4 Stomps-Burkhardt chairs I bought at a garage sale this weekend that don't sound like any of the others described and am interested in finding out more about them. They are very simple quarter-sawn oak - no carvings or etchings. I can forward pictures, if you just tell me where.

Thanks in advance for any information,
Lia

To Wilhemina,

I sent you an inquiry by email regarding the rocking chair passed on to me by my mother, and to her by her mother. I included two photos, and I hope you can give me some information about it. I think it is an S-B chair. I mentioned that this chair is very sentimental in that my brothers and I played on it constantly while growing up. They are now gone.

And there is another very strange coincidence. My wife's parents gave us an identical rocking chair when we were married in 1973. They had no idea that I had grown up with the chair's twin!

Hope to hear from you soon.

I just inherited a Stomps-Burkhard Dayton Ohio Lions Head chair No.X73. Curved seat and curved legs with spindle cross braces. Would like to know a bit more about this piece. It was always in the enter way at my grandparents house and we were never allowed to sit in it. I have a picture of my grandfather propped up in it with his Baptismal dress on from 1911, he was from Dayton. Thank you in advance for any info.

I have a set of 6 Stomps Burhardt chairs that I would like to sell. They are refinished and re-upholstered and in excellent condition. There are partial labels on the bottom of the chairs with the name Stomps Burkhardt. I can email photos of the chairs if interested. They are a hiphugger style chair and I believe they are cherry. They have turned front legs and curved back legs and turned spindles. There is a scrollwork design carved in the back of each and a 1 1/2" circle cut in the center of each back.

I just purchased an oak rocker made by the Stomps-Burkhardt Co. It is very low to the ground and has a very ornate carving of possibly a ladies or mans face surrounded by a wreath of flowers and leaves on the top back of the chair. There is also intricate carving of leaves below the seat on the front and below the spindles. I am interested in finding out about its history as well as the value. I would love to purchase a copy of the catalog which shows a picture of the chair. I have very detailed pictures I can send if you will let me know where to e-mail them. Thanks in advance for your help. Cindy cdw1350@aol.com

I would like to get more information about a Stomps Rocking Chair it has been in the family for over 75 years that I know of. It has a low seat and leather carved back with many colonials (men & women) in a tavern or large room. The arms are carved with what looks to be lion heads at the hand rests. The company label is clear on the bottom of the chair , "The Stomps Burkhardt Co. Dayton Ohio with No. A140. Can anyone help? Is there a catalog available? Has anyone heard from Wilhemina as she has not posted to this site since 10/2005. I sent an e-mail to her requesting info on a Stomps Burkhardt dining set @ ahp@germaine.net as she requested but have not heard back from her. I have a dining table and five chairs, quarter sawn oak with queen anne cabriole legs, chairs are splat back, labeled Stomps Burkhardt. The set belonged to my mother and pieces were lost over the years as a result of various moves. I would be interested in replacing the missing pieces which include a sideboard with mirror, arm chair, and leaves with center support legs. If anyone has information they could provide it would be greatly appreciated. My e-mail is mdutkevicz@msn.com, I can provide photos if needed.

I have inherited a set of six T-Back Stomp-Burkhardt Co. chairs and a claw-foot table w/2 leaves (origin unknow). I am trying to date and find the value of the set. I did come across the identical table online w/3 leaves for 2000.00. The same website posted the identical chairs(don't know if they were stomp-burkhardt) for 1800.00. The person w/the table and chairs for sale had refinished them. Mine are original finish w/original leather seats. Very good condition. If anyone has any information about the table and chairs, I would greatly appreciate it. Please e-mail me at nbbb123@comcast.net. Thanks in advance.
