Well, who can forget "Bernie's Hock Shop", the garage-band wanna be rock star's friend? There was a kid in my brother's class who managed to wheedle his parents into buying him a sitar - yes, a 27-string, moveable fret, needs-a-ten-armed Hindu god to tune (and needs tuning every ten minutes), great big unwieldy mewling Northern Indian Vedic classical instrument that takes three incarnations to learn to play. It wound up in Bernie's window at least twice before being sold to someone who either could play it or hocked it in Cincinnati instead of Dayton. Maybe Lennon bought it to play a homage to Groucho Marx. Or maybe it got Stalin. I mean, stolen.
ha ha.

There was a bar in Huber called "Peyton Place". It was the kind of place that nobody went to unless they didn't mind the neighborhood busybodies noting whose car was parked outside. Not to mention the Wayne Twp. cops noting down one's license number. Rumor had it Bill Stepp had a hand in the place, but there were lots of rumors around Stepp.

Koontz's Cafeteria. One thing I wish was still around not only in Dayton but everwhere is inexpensive, serve-yourself, pick it out and put it on your tray cafeteria dining. I guess these days many if not most establishments make major bucks from alcohol sales. Rents follow, so....

"The Best of the Wurst", a German place with great food. Is it still there? Couldn't remember if it was on Troy or Brandt last time I was in town.

Couldn't find Russell's Barber Shop, either. But out on the edge of Fairborn, the Artz family still operates their shop, located on the family spread. One of the Artz clan was a class below mine at Wayne.

In Huber Heights, a couple of guys opened a sports equipment shop called "Tri-Area Sports". "Tri-area" referred to (as I remember) Huber, Dayton, and Vandalia. What a clunky name. I would have called it (more grandiosely) "Miami Valley Regional Sports Equipment". Tri-area. Sheesh. No wonder they tanked.

There was a hardware store like that in "downtown" Bellbrook, I think it was Pennewits or something similar. If you couldn't find something anywhere else, odds are they had it. The old gentleman who owned the place knew exactly where everything was, despite the fact there seemed to be little rhyme or reason as to how merchandise was laid out. I think the store closed in the late 80s.

Another place some may remember was Sandy's Surplus in Beavercreek, located in the strip mall across Patterson from the old Barrel Factory. Again, Sandy seemed to know where everything was in the mess he called a store. He used to get some really odd stuff, including military clothing from very obscure countries. For years I had a Portuguese combat tunic I bought there. Very distinctive camo pattern used by the Portuguese in their African colonies. Sandy's closed in the mid-to-late 70s.

Graeff Hardware on Wayne Ave. You could get nails by the pound and individual nuts, bolts and screws for pennies. It's a Dollar store now.

IGA Grocery on Patterson between Woodman and Watervaliet. It's been about a zillion different businesses since it closed.

There was a 'real' butcher shop on Wayne, just a block or two off Smithville. The knives and saws fascinated me as a kid. Don't know what is in there now.

Americana music and the affiliated Rock Shop on Watervaliet. Been a couple of different music stores in there since.

Another Bellbrook business I frequented back in the 70s was a jeans outlet store. It was diagonally across 725 from Pennewits. They sold jean seconds for about half the price of Levis in the retail stores. As I remember it, some jean brands had the brand name label on the back side cut off, others there was no way to tell you weren't buying first quality jeans.

Just spent a half hour posting a reply here and when I submitted it, the spam code had expired and it erased my whole post. I REALLY hate this damn spam code. This is the ONLY site that has this feature of the many I frequent.
I can't remember all I wrote so I'm not even gonna try but it was about a hardware store at Spinning and Kemp called Throckmortons that had IBM cards and kids on rollerskates back in early 60's that I thought was so cool.

Been having the same problem with spam prevention and even have others verify it is going in correctly and still won't take it. A new one for me is I have to login everytime and had it set to remember me. Getting to be a pain especially if you've written at length. Here we go again. Second time for the spam thing

I've had the same thing happen to me several times. It's very aggravating to spend your time posting something and then have the spam code reject it. I can't understand why they can't come up with a simpler solution if they insist on having a spam code. You're right tlturbo. I'm on many sites also and this is the only site that requires me to type in a spam code. If they have to have one, why not have something you can read.

I'm trying to place Thockmortons tlturbo. The name sounds so familiar. Was it on the SE or SW corner.

I'm editing to let you know I had to type the spam code in three times before it accepted this post. It was going to be my last time

Syx - it was on the SW corner in a little strip center that also had a neighborhood watering hole in there. I took a guy I worked with that lived near there hunting at WPAFB one time and we stopped in there for a beer and maybe a sandwich.

Throckmortons had one of each item wired to pegboards that ran up and down the isles and bins at the top with IBM cards for each item. You picked out all the cards and took them to the back where they printed out your order and kids on rollerskates ran around the back gathering up your order.

HA take that spam blocker - beat ya this time.

Remember the Puki-Puki Lounge out near Huber Heights that was a dance and night club BUT had a jacuzzi you could sit in? Late 60's era.

Beats me - I remember leaving the Diamond Club and heading out toward Huber Heights. Probably on one of those something-Pike roads.
We hav discussed these club before on the Nightclub thread but another to remember was the LT (Leisure Time) Club out that way also. Huge empty hall with loud music, strobes and psycedelic slide shows on the tall walls. We're talking late 60's on these.

I've been there a few times. I was with a large group of workers from a factory on Stop Eight rd. They used to go there on Thursday nights. I only went 4 or 5 times at thre most. That would have been in '73-'74.

Several places mentioned above I do remember quite well. I lived in the Dayton Victory apts. and San Rae Bakery and Deli was around the corner. Would go there for baked goods on a Sunday morning.Made many a quick trip for something needed for lunch or dinner meal. The magic shop on Brown st. was a place I would go also and had picked that habit up from my Dad. You never knew what he was going to pull and I ended up with the same weird habit. We always thought we were funny but don't remember too many other people thinking so.Loved Koontz cafeteria and think it was in the 60's when I made my last visit. Food was wonderful. The Diamond Club and Rendevoux club were my favorite hangouts for meeting up with friends and dancing.Back in those days you had your hand stamped and you either were 18 and could buy 3.2 beer or over 21 and you could have the high test.

What was the name of the bar in Moraine where the GM 3rd shift guys would go to drink breakfast after work? I had a friend who worked at that plant as a summer hire, he had some crazy stories about the stuff that went on there at like 7 am. Breakfast of choice was apparently a couple quarts of Strohs and fried bologna sandwiches.

Wonder if the place is still open?

This has been mentioned in several other places, BUT there was the Pookie Pookie Club out toward Huber Heights in the late 60's that had a band, dancefloor but also a BIG Jacuzzi. You could bring your own (maybe rent) swimsuit and sit in the hot tub with your drink kinda like on a cruise ship and listen to the music and watch people. Also a great way to better check out what the gals REALLY looked like ha ha. Not sure how long it lasted. Health Dept probably killed it.

Another that was similar to "Custom Electronics" in the 70's was the "Lafayette Radio" store on Ludlow Street.

Monnie's post reminded me of the Velva Sheen outlet off Wilmington in Kettering. Velva Sheen was a Cincy based maker of custom-print apparel (t-shirts, sweats, jerseys, jackets etc.). They sold misprints and overruns at their outlets stores here as well as in/around Cincinnati at dirt cheap prices. Most of the shirts I wore in the 70s in college at UC came from one of their outlets.

Many of the misprint items were a scream, sometimes it made you wonder if anyone at Velva Sheen owned a dictionary. I had at least a dozen college t-shirts where the name of the schools had been misspelled, my favorite being one that said something like "Univsary of West Vergina".

Sadly Velva Sheen went out of business in the early 90s. I think the ASPCA is now in the former outlet in Kettering.

Lafayette Radio also had a store at S. Dixie & Dorothy Lane. I bought a Dual 1229 turntable there in 1972 when I was in the Air Force and still have it.

Joey - The Brick Shirt House was owned by Don (the Egyptian)? Didn't know that. He did a wild paint job on my 69 corvette about 1970. Don, myself and several other guys went to Lauderdale for Easter Break in 70 or 71. What a trip.

does anyone remember Giant Don's Furniture? I have no idea where it was, but his ads were great,Don [who weighted 400 lbs] would stand on a couch and holler his slogan ,"buy a living room set and i'll give you a good used car or a real live pony, it won't get you to California but it will get mom to the store or the kids to school" I always wondered if anyone actually got the pony? I know Don's real name was Ralph Fiste and later owned Jack Pott's asphalt paving co

Chris Harris owned a appliance store on stroop rd for years and did his own ads on tv & radio. He I believe was also a basketball star at UD The odd thing about Harris was not his store or ads but his family he had about 17-18 kids[no joke I met his daughter who #14 ] and had a barracks type bldg. [it's still there] in his back yard in beavercreek after his store went broke probably from buying food for a herd the family moved to the northwest wonder if they made the move in a greyhound charter

The Morgan House, home of the monster malts and the moron burger(10 inches in diameter). The first drive thru pick up in the Dayton area. It was located where Bolt's is now on North Main Street. You could eat inside or use the drive thru and park down behind the building.
