delcodude....Yep, It was Burger King... Red barn didn't use a bun on their fish sandwich... It was kind of a big piece of toast that was folded over...
Tell me this. How does McDonalds find a square fish in the ocean to make their fish-fillet sandwich... I have been fishing for years and have never caught a square fish.

I can remember having my first Wendy's burger. It was in Vandalia. It was so good back then... I wonder how the "new" Wendy's" recipe is.......Anyone tried it?

Haven't tried the new burger from Wendy's yet, but plan to very soon. Has anyone on here mentioned the Joe's pizza at Airway and Smithville? It has been there for over 40 years now, and still tastes the same. Grew up eating that stuff, and still love it....

--Key Hole Restaurant on Salem.
--Flints burger joint on Salem.
--The Char Burger, also on Salem, right next to Salem Drive-in. They had a wishing fountain inside and we'd throw pennies in. Char Burger went out of business and Golden Nugget moved into the spot.

Yeah that sucks. I try to take everyone out for pizza when we are there but I never carry that much cash. They need to get into the modern world. NO ONE carries cash these days. I always fuss at them when we go there but they could care less.

Curious who remembers the Kettering Village Inn on Far Hills just north of Stroop. They have been gone since the early 1990's, but still miss their Lobster Alfredo and pizzas.

To Timmayer: Yes, there used to be a Haunted House Bar. I lived on Revere Ave in an apartment in 1970 and my neighbor was named John(?) Lamb and he owned the bar.

I don't know about 40 years ago but it's as good as twenty years ago. It's still awesome as I ever remember it

I'll second that thumbsdown on Hasty Tasty fried chicken. Bland as all get out and not high quality pieces either.

Jeds on Dorothy Lane. Known for their Chili and Salad bar. Had food poisoning from the Chili there and was in the hospital. Ponderosa... worked at the one on Wilmington Pike for numerous years. Tues night special $1.89 for #2 ribeye steak dinner or #4 chopped steak dinner including roll, baked potatoe and small salad in a plastic brown bowl. Line would be out the door and around the side of the building. long tables with benches and then swing out chairs. King Cole restaurant downtown and The Tropics, The Barnsider, Linden House, Barnaby's in Belmont. Goody Goody had brownie desert with ice cream and homemade hot fudge. Neil's (or something like that in Oakwood area). Stacksteders, Whimpies... Good food in Dayton!

Up in Springboro from south Florida this week visiting my wife's brother for Thanksgiving. As usual I had to hit my favorites. Had the fish fillet sandwich and onion rings at Frischs, deep fried mushrooms at Nicks in Xenia, and a great Cassano's pizza in Xenia also.... All were fantastic.

I just found this place a couple of days ago and I think I am getting close to have read all the comments here. Curt, smack me if I get to posting too much. no one has mentioned Vito's Venice Inn across Dorothy Lane from the old Rike's Kettering by the railroad tracks. was a place to take a date on a special night. also, anyone remember Lum's hot dogs boiled in beer? I swear it was on Linden across from East-town shopping center, but am doubting my memory.
Dia & turbo, thank you both for remembering the Putt Putt on Airway. I too was beginning to think I had dreamed it. favorite hole was the one that went down hill and the ball sailed over the sidewalk below to the other half of the green.
newsnot, when did Arby change their meat? was it around 1979-80? obviously you worked for one of the meat suppliers, you mentioned the skinned top rounds in this thread and in another you found a name I had all but forgotten, Fred Adler. I think he retired around the time Liberal moved Gem Packing to Beavercreek, there in the woods about 100 yards north east of the former barrel factory site. did you also do any business with Charlie Winger? paul

plr2 - Yes, there was a Lums on Linden across from a shopping center, just West of Woodman I believe?? I loved the Ollie Burger and supposedly here in S FL there is still a Lums that serves it in Davie I believe. I remember going there to get a beer after having my wisdom teeth extracted. HA HA

The only thing I remember being across the street from Rikes Kettering on Dorothy Lane was some nightclub that had a pink pussy cat sign outside I believe. Don't remember much about the putt putt on Airways except it being there. I always got gas at the starion across from it or across Airways at the Exxon? on the corner of National. That Rootbeer place next to it was the first place I had a TACO.

plr2 - I remember Vito's Venice Inn very well. My sister had her wedding rehearsal dinner there in 1967 or 68. The food was supposed to be very good but on that night it wasn't and my sister was very disappointed.
And the Putt Putt on Airway was one of my favorite places as a little girl. One of my favorite memories of summer time in the early 60s was when my Dad would take my best friend Karen and me to Putt Putt and leave us to play two full rounds. What freedom and the chance to do something I loved to do for as long as I wanted was so special to me.
I can't remember when Arby's changed their meat but I do remember when they first opened that they served potato chips. At the time I really didn't like french fries too much so I was upset when they took the chips off of the menu.

no maxed it wasn't. I assume you mean the driving range across from the bowling alley and kart track on Linden. this Putt Putt was at the top of the hill on Airway on out about National Rd, across Airway from the now Waffle House. it was at least 4 times bigger than the normal Putt Putt. some balls had to be hit across a creek. tons of fun. was a tree line behind it and behind (south west) of that was a big auto junk yard, Tom's. driveway to get in was down at the bottom of the hill by where the used car lot is now, it had to be moved for 675 to go through. Putt Putt was about a quarter mile or so before the original entrance to Wright State. yeah, the university with two buildings when I started there. someone starts a thread about shenanigans and I might have to tell about the moat around the first library. paul

Putt Putt - in the old days, New Germany Trebine went west from Bellbrook Fairfield Rd all the way to Airways. It is blocked off now behind the Home Depot but it used to form a point where it merged into Airways. There was a gas station on this point and then later a used car lot. Across Airways was the Rootbeer place and on the south side of where New Germany and Airways met was the Putt Putt. I remember when they started building Wright State and I went there the summer after High School grad (65) and took English before going off to OU. One thing I remember was after you went past where the Nutter Center now is on Col Glenn and made the curve to the left heading down toward the base, on the left side was a large field with a big woods behinf it. Occasionally in the summer they would have blue grass concerts back in the woods over a weekend. A little further down Col Glenn just before the rail road tracks, again over on the left, there were a lot of old roads criscrossing a large field. Back in the early 50's this was part of the base and there were barricks in there. They tore them down but left the roads. Our corvette club used them for auto crosses several times around 1970.

Remember going to the mall (Salem usually) and Hickory Farms of Ohio always had a stand in the middle around the holidays. They would give samples of the summer sausage, cheeses, and mustards. Oh so good. The last time I tried Hickory Farms I was very dissappointed

plr2- My very first bartending job was at Vito's Venice Inn on Dorthy Lane.
I worked there for three years in the mid 70's.The place was originally opened by Vito and Rose Gazzetta and then passed on to their sons Joe and Tony.
Tony sold out to Joe and opened his own restaurant on the upper level of the Dayton mall.I worked there as well in the mid 80's.

North Star was a block or so N on Dixie and I think the South Dixie Drive-in was on the corner and at one time there was a little race track behind it. Could be mistaken thouth. Doesn't make sense to having 2 drive-ins within 1 mile of each other???

The Northstar was barely south of Needmore Rd.Just a little west,on Needmore, was the Thimbledrome. It was a racetrack for quarter midget races for years.
The Dixie Drive-in was about 3/4 mi. north or so on North Dixie. I grew up in this area.I recall when Needmore Rd,west of N Dixie was a 2 lane winding road.It used to be great hunting in the fields adjacent to that part of Needmore.

I just had the names mixed up. Darn Vegas, you are a kid. HA I moved from Dayton to FL in Jan 72 and they were still there then - at least the Dixie was. Funny, I remember going there a lot but don't remember going to the Northstar. Wonder why? I think on here last year someone mentioned that parts of the race track are still beck there behind what's there now.

I remember the Sandys and the race track very well. Bob Shannon of Shannon buick had one of the midget race cars.
Even though the two drive-ins were that close they were still both busy. The car full prices and those hiding in the trunk made for a good party!
I cant seem to remember what store was at the conner of Dixie & Needmore tho.

This topic is my absolute favorite on the Dayton Memories Blog. So many eateries have come and gone in Dayton over the years, hard to believe this many of us remember so many of them. Thanks to all who've brought so many food memories back to me!

One fast food place I don't recall seeing discussed here was Rax Roast Beef. Rax was a regional chain, based out of Columbus I think. What was remarkable about Rax was the salad/food bar they offered in the mid-80s. At that point, you seldom saw anyone buy a sandwich there.

Rax and Wendy's, another Columbus based chain, had what I can only call a "salad bar war" in the late 80s. Every week it seemed one of the chains would add some new item to their sald bar, only to bested by the other shortly thereafter. No way they made money on what they provided for $3.99. In fact I'm convinced Wendy's purposely spent Rax into oblivion by continually upping the salad bar ante.

Rax survived at least up through 2010. There was a very, very sad Rax location in Lancaster that we used to stop at on one family trip. No idea if it's still operating. We learned to avoid that stop...

I loved Rax and I thought the food was much better than Arby's. I went to the one at N Main and Turner Rd but it closed many years ago, 20 or more probably. There's now a pharmacy at the location. In fact, there are three pharmacies within a two block area.
