olds88 and ASF56 in earlier post mentioned Gaccetta's Restaurant on Brown St. (near Hickory I believe). Vito and Rose Gacetta started out with Colossimo's Restaurant at Richard and Clay in the 1940's and opened their own restaurant on Brown St. later on. When US 35 took the Brown St. restaurant they opened Vito's Venice Inn across from Rike's Kettering on E. Dorothy Lane. When Vito and Rose retired their sons Tony and Joe ran the Venice Inn for a time and then Joe alone ran it. Tony opened another Italian restaurant on the second floor of the Dayton Mall. I remember eating there in the 1970's and maybe into the 80's.

I always liked the pork tenderloin at the Dutchman Pantry, on Springfield St., near N. Van Lear St., and the "Jeans Diner" on Keowee St., just notrh of Leo St., where they had great steak and eggs breakfast, and, Wympees at E. Third and Wayne, where bI used to work as a teenager.

There were Three Golden Nuggets, 1. Dorothy Lane and So. Dixie,2. Salem Ave, next to the old Salem Drive In, and 3. Stanley and Keowee, all had great food.

olds88 - I'm not aware of Colossimo's ever having a Moraine location. I was born in 1947 and lived in a house on Clay Street right behind Colossimo's until I was about 4 years old. I can remember walking into the back door of the restaurant in the off hours and Catherine Colossimo ("old man" Colosimmo's daughter) would play "Hello Richard" on the jukebox for me. From what I remember, Vito Gacetta spent most of his time in the kitchen as chef at that time.

olds88 I remember the restaurant you are referring to. It sat at the end of dryden rd right below the over pass to Dwyer mill. My dad owned a restaurant in south Miamisburg on old rte. 25. It was called The Range. The reason for the name was because there was a minature golf and driving range on either side also the Miami Cruise In drive in theater was right next door. We lived on Cincinnati St. in Dayton and every morning I would ride with my dad in his 49 ford to open every day and we would go that way to work. Here is something that relates to this subject. Our other route to the restaurant was to go across the Stewart St. bridge an go south on Patterson Blvd which was rte. 25. There was a restaurant that was being built in Moraine City across from the Frigidare plant. They had a sign in front during construction asking to name restaurant and win a prize. The name of that restaurant was Angelos Drive In,it was the owners first name. That was in the early fifties.Later in the sixties I just about lived there. They were open all night and there were a lot of memories there. "GREAT MEMORIES"

Was just talking about Vitos at a Christmas get together.Used to be about the area where Krispi cream is on Dorothy lane. Kettering had dozens of places to eat and now very few.Anyone remember the name of a restaurant that was pretty close to the corner of Dorothy lane and woodman where throckmortons is. Name that comes to mind is the Black knight or something similar and more Chinese as do remember they had a nice selection of Chinese beer. Had color lights all around the outside. Hey Olds am sure you have the answer as you do pretty good in this area. Also saw where the old Yum Yum turned to an upscale restaurant named LaBerge? It went out of business about a year ago and has been torn down and something else going up now. This is in the area of Town and Country. Do remember the Brown Derby on Bigger as my one daughter worked there for a time. Also Ryans steak house at corner of Wilmington and Stroop.

Keugene48 - As I recall, the restaurant was called
Chung Sun. I used to eat there all the time with my Mom when we would go downtown to shop. As I also recall, it was suddenly closed and Mom said the health department shut them down.

Do you remember The Purple Cow? Just around the corner from Rike's. They had wonderful burgers and shakes. I actually have a statue of the Purple Cow and her baby. I make Rike's barbequed hamburger all the time. Got the recipe many years ago from a neighbor. Her Mom worked there.

I didn't check all the previous posts, but how about Beef Chief. There was one in Miamisburg and then an Arbys took it's place. I believe their store's sign was a Native American with a Head Dress. I don't know if there were any other locations in Dayton or surrounding suburbs.

mpup,

There was also a Beef Chief on Rt. 741 just south of Alex-Bell. Arby's bought both Beef Chiefs in the late 70's or early 80's. After Arby's moved out of the 741 location, it was a Cassano's for awhile, I think. The building is now gone.

Looking through the comments I don't see mention of the Frisch's on Main Street across from Rikes. My ex-husband worked there as a cook in the late 60's while he was attending Fairview High School. I believe it was owned by a man named "Hank" who also had Rax's Roast Beef on North Main.

I'm trying to figure something out for my dad he told me that either the black knight that was on Dorothy ln in Kettering or a different restaurant in the same building got in trouble for catching and cooking cats. He said he thinks the black knight turned into a Chinese restaurant but he can't remember the name can anyone help? Thanks

mtomashot7.. If my memory is still working right, I believe their was a restaurant called Vitos where Crispy Creme is now that Im thinking was a Chinese place, but then again there could have been something else where the black night used to be.

Dad used to own a hardware store on the west side that closed in 1968. Two of his favorite restaurants were on Brown street. He loved the hot shots at the Westward Ho Cafeteria and the chili spaghetti at Frisch's, which is the entrance to UD today. Otherwise, he ate at one of the two bars near his store that mainly catered to the Sunshine Biscuit Company employees. It was at one of those bars I discovered the existence of a fried egg sandwich.

The Black Knight was down near the corner of Dorothy Lane and Woodman, but on Dorothy Lane.... Vito's was on the same side of the street, but up next to Delco Park. Darned if I can remember the name of the Chinese joint that was in that building, but I'm thinking the entrance was on the left side, and flanked by a couple big Chinese lions or dogs?

Steve K, I think you're right. I can't think of the name either. The other Chinese restaurant was near the SW corner of the intersection, on Woodman. That one was Keng Wha.

Some time in the early sixties my brother and I decided we wanted to get a hamburger. I was about 8 and my brother was about 5. We lived on Eden lane just north of Burkhardt. We broke into our piggy banks to get enough money to get the food. We then walked (about a mile following the creek) to the Sandy's on Woodman drive and pooled our money to buy a couple of hamburgers and then ate them as we walked back home. One of our many adventures. I can't imagine doing something like that in today's time.
