Another interesting bit about Fairmont- the original Fairmont High School, back in the 1920s, was on West Dorothy Lane- I think a Kettering Fire Station has long occupied that space now. It's on the south side of W. Dorothy, just a little bit east of the Ridgeway Road overpass.

Went to kindergarten at Oakwood next to the Wright Bros estate; did'nt realize as a kid how cool that was. Had a rotten teacher ( mrs Penny) very snobby class. Went to Holy Angels till 7th grade; where The heat was off and on. I caused quite a stir one year when I refused to take off my Pants underneath my skirt( I walked to school) when the heat was not workIng; I told the nun to tell the boys to take off their pants as well...you can imagine how well that went over!!

I went to Fairview, Fairport and Cornell Heights Elementary. Then on to Fairview High School. I went back to Cornell Heights a few years ago and they permitted be to take some photos. I was surprised that the Gym and halls were still the same as the sixties. It was a very well kept and clean school that should have not been torn down.

I must have been in the same class with Cilla46. I had all those teachers except Mrs. Arnovitz. My first-grade teacher was Miss Whitesell. Couldn't have asked for a better teacher!
Anyone know whatever happened to Mr. Myers? In hindsight he seems to have been younger than a lot of the faculty.
Sad to read that Lincoln was torn down. I bet that building could have stood for a hundred years!
I lived on Ware Avenue and we used to crawl under the fence into Woodland Cemetery all the time. There was a lot of land that the cemetery and UD had not developed yet and it was kind of like being in the country.

We may have been in some classes together at Lincoln if we had many of the same teachers. My last name was Bryant and there were 7 of us who all went to Lincoln.
Some of my school friends were Stephany Jackson,Judy Davis,Corrine Clark,Marilyn McGoo,Sharon Winklejohn and some whose last names I have forgotten over the years.

I just discovered this site, so hopefully my comments are relevant. I attended Belmont Elementary. I never heard the rumor about an underground tunnel, but I doubt it. Tom Luster absolutely rocked. My parents ran into him a few times at garage sales in the 80s. I was very sad when he passed away. I think he might have had cancer. I was fond of the music teacher, Carl Forbriger and, I believe, he may still be alive. Would be curious to hear about him.

I recall when I was in the fifth grade I had caught a Garter snake in late August or so.
I wanted to show my pet,"Homer," to my friends at school.I found an old straw purse my mom no longer used. I put the snake in thethis straw container and walked to school. I left the basket looking purse in the cloak room. I was going to show my friends Homer at recess.
I left the class to use the restroom. When I returned,ALL my classmates were hovering in a corner of theroom. My elderly female teacher was standing on her desk, screaming my name. The female principal was at the entrance to the room. She wouldn,t enter the room.
I saw poor Homer coiled in the middle of the room. I immediately rescued him from the sreaming classmates, teacher, and principal.I had to release Homer when I was ordered to get him outside.
I recall a long wait in the office, but I don't remember much else.
When school was dismissed for the day,I found Homer near where I had released him.My mom and I had a long discussion that evening.

I would guess that today, the 911 system would be overloaded and first responders would be abundant. Definitely a different time.

The playground at Parkwood Elem wasn't fenced in and had a great big field and a cool ditch to play in. One student had a dog that would come and visit us at recess and would on occasion find his way into the school and roam the hallways. Fun times!

I atended Lincoln in the 60s and hated it. My mom was active in the PTA, and Principal Myers forced the teachers to attend the PTA meetings. So many of the teachers took it out on the kids of those who were active in the PTA. We also had a lesbian teacher--I know this for a fact because after she retired she and a relative of mine became a couple. But overall at Lincoln, I felt the teachers played favorites, forced us into a lockstep learning approach, and most of them were unmarried spinsters who seemed angry with their lives. The kids who were the favorites got away with murder. Funny that I later became a teacher (now retired) and I consciously made the effort to be nothing like the teachers I had at Lincoln.

I'm sorry, I didn't see that you had asked the question until just now. Last name Fensel, Fairmont class of '59- likewise my father, class of '63- so he would be in your senior yearbook, if you have it.

When I started going to Fairmont in 1988, the gym teacher/track coach recognized my name, and he said, "Boy, your dad was a hell of a gymnast!" Haha...great memory, for him, and for me to this day.

Not sure about the year as I was oblivious to time, but I went to Lincoln for a year can't remember the year but I was later on dating a girl that looked like she was 20 and I was about 13 she was 14 and the girls at the school called her little miss make up, I do remember riding my bike down Nassau hill it was about the steepest hill in Dayton. I guess every one at the school viewed me as a hood but I turned out better then I was . The girls name was Judy Cogan and she lived right across the street from the school.

I'll go a little further back to Preschool... At the time, we were living on Silver Rock just off of Dixie and I went to an "in home" preschool that was on a huge chunck of land with trails, horses, etc. All I remember is that the name of the woman/teacher was Mrs. Westridge. I should try to find out more about her.
Then we moved to Woodman Park Apts in '73 and I went to kindergarten at Lewton Elementary on Linden really close to Woodman drive. I don't believe that's a school anymore. Then 1st-3rd I was at St. Helens on Burkhardt Rd. We moved up to Sidney when I went to 4th grade.

Hunt69 just read your garter snake story and found it humorous.Times definitely different back then. As you have probably noticed the generations now have been coddled and grow up not knowing how to deal. Funny how those of us who go way back turned out pretty stable overall and it started in the home with the school supporting the family. Cooperating with one another was the key here and that's lacking in lives today.

I went to Cornell Heights in the 60's. I lived a block from school and most of us walked to school. The principal was Miss Stewart and everyone was terrified of her. I understand the school has been torn down.

At Lincoln in the late 60s early 70s there was a male teacher who loved to whip/paddle the kids, to the point where he would pretty much single out kids for punishment, even if the infraction was minor. I don't remember his name and if I did I wouldn't want to post it. But I remember some of the kids thought it was 'unnatural' the number of kids he would drag into the principal's office and paddle them--even the so-called good or cool kids were paddled. I studied psychology later in college and often wondered about that guy.

To cilla46,

I know this may seem crazy, but I've seen your posts on other threads, and I've concluded that this is really a small world! I must have known you when I lived on Illinois Ave, or at least passed you by or saw you. I attended Lincoln Elementary, too, from 1955-1963. The craziest thing is, when we moved from Illinois Ave in 1963, we also moved to Holly Ave, where I then attended Belmont High School.
You were closer in age to my sister then you are to myself. As she is a couple of years older then I am, she might have been in a couple of your classes, or you might even have known her! I remember from one of your earlier posts about Seeger's Market, saying that you would go in there before school, and we would stop in on our way to school and buy candy all the time as well. I also remembered all the teachers you mentioned. I was just curious if you might remember my sister or myself. My name is Billy and my sister is Jeannie. I would be interested to know if you remember any of the same things that Jeannie and I might!

To KidPast50,

Did Janie Powers have a brother named Bob? Also, did you know Becky Shannon? My brother ran around with Bob Powers and Danny Moss. I was in classes with Becky Shannon, however, I was told she passed, due to a motorcycle accident when she was in high school.

Billd1952,

I was next door neighbors with the Powers. They lived on the corner and we lived in the house right next door. I believe they had a large family. I think there were 6 Power kids. I used to play basketball with Willy Powers, although he was a few years younger than me. Janie Powers did have a brother named Bob! The name Becky Shannon sounds very familiar but I cannot place her. I also remember the name Danny Moss, I just can't put a face to the name. My older sister Jeannie would have been just about his age and I recall her mentioning him a few times. It's very possible she knew your brother as well!

Another connection with my previous post, I believe a number of those kids worked at a donut shop part-time somewhere in the vicinity of Belmont High School. Can’t remember the name, but maybe someone bought donuts there and remembers the name. I think it may have been a popular place with the young kids at the time.

I was a product of Kettering schools-- 1st and 2nd grade at Ernest (sp?) and 3 - 6 at Dorothy Lane. The talent shows at Dorothy Lane were a lot of fun but the Christmas & Easter shows involved a lot of costumes and singing and even a dance number if I remember correctly. My first acting experience was lead in the Easter play at Dorothy Lane during 6th grade and I still remember several of the lines.

Band was fun but Mr Haines had more patience with us when we were older at Barnes Jr High than with us just starting out-- although I was always impressed with how easily he could repair instruments with just a small knife or his lighter (if the cork on my clarinet was loose, he would heat it up with his lighter and somehow that made it shrink and stay in place). My 5th grade teacher-- I want to say his name was Mr. Decker-- had a second job driving a delivery truck for one of the local bakeries, down on Patterson near BHA I believe, and one of our field trips was to that bakery. The one activity I joined most (at least in the classroom) was the SRA readings.

However, I do have a question for the group. I have the distinct memory of a casket factory more or less across from Dorothy Lane school, meaning on the north side of the street, but I don't find any reference to such a business and now wonder if I am mixing locations. Does anyone remember it or am I nuts?

I went to several Elementary Schools, but the one I remember most is Central close to downtown Dayton. I remember Miss Nafscer was my teacher and maybe Mrs. Combs in the 3rd. Grade. We walked to and from school all the time. We always said the Pledge and The Lords' prayer every morning. We went home for lunch then back
I remember getting shots at school, standing in a line for my turn. We had a Boys' side and a Girls' side at recess.

I moved around a lot due to parent's divorce and such. I went to Grant, Cleveland, Belmont and briefly to Ruskin Elementary schools. Was bussed to Wogaman and Residence Park. Then, I moved to West Carrollton and went to school there before ending up in Kettering. All in all, I went to about 8 different schools by the time I graduated from Fairmont West High School.

Oh Connie, yes to both. I do remember the alley, I used to use it as a short cut, and I remember where you lived too. I had Miss Everett too for 3rd grade, that would have been about 1952 I guess. Do you remember a Miss Dolly? She taught my dad in about 1923 and me in 1952ish. I lived right on the corner of Broadway and Negley, about a 3 story stone house, an alley ran behind it. I am sorry I don't remember you specifically, but chances are we knew each other in school. Did you know a girl named Sue Trusty, she lived on Ferguson? Had a younger sister. She and I were "kids" as we used to say...really meant friends. thank you for responding, it is nice to share memories with you.
