Dad worked at NCR for 41 years and his dad for nearly as many years.

He worked in the carpentry dept (later Bldg & Grounds Maint) and it never failed to amaze me when we'd be on vacation hundreds of miles from Dayton and some other NCR guy would spot him and sing out "Hey, Whitey!" It continued to happen for many years after he retired.

My father worked for Miami Maid Bakery and then it was purchased by Pennington Bread. He passed away in 1980 and didn't get to retire. My mother was normally a stay at home mother, but had times where she would work part-time at Cheerheart Cleaners at the Spin-Kemp shopping center - just to "help out."

Yep, that was him - Don Trochelman. He passed away in 1995. His mother lived just down the street on Webster and he was raised there in the house that his father built.

My Mom was a homemaker for the most part, but she did work at Dayton Steel Foundry several times, going back when they needed her. I think her boss was Sam??? My Dad worked at a Supply & Tool Co, then was in WW2 and the Korean War, and back to the tool company from where he retired.

My Dad worked at Inland on W. Third St. I think he was there when I was born in 1940 and retired from there somewhere in the 1970s.
My Mom worked at Inland for awhile and later was at Wolf Creek Soap Company part time. I would go with her while she cleaned the facilities there. She died in 1954 or 1955.
Names were Kenneth and Mary Coon.

My Dad worked briefly at Reynolds and Reynolds then started a small business on Linden which he had until late 70's. My Mother worked at Truman Optical downtown Dayton, later at Mayer Mens Clothing shop in Oakwood and then for her remaining years of employment at the JC Penny store at Town and Country. I also remember how lonely it became for us kids to have a Mother home for years greeting us after school and then going home to an empty house!!

My Dad first came to Dayton in '43. He was a glider test pilot at Wright Field and later on the glider testing was moved to Wilmington. My parents met in downtown Dayton at a place called Lantz Merry-Go-Round. They got married April '44 and moved to Wilmington. Dad retired from the Army in'60 and we ended up in East Kettering. He worked briefly at NCR and Bowser-Morner Testing Labs, then got a job in the Safety Bldg as Deputy Clerk of Courts. Later he was part-time parts driver for Langs and Hopkins Chevrolet. Passed away in 1995.
My Mom worked part-time for Bil-Lin Ceramic Studio in the '60s, then volunteered at Kettering Hospital for a few months shy of 30 years. She passed in 2009.

Dad was bartender in numerous bars around the Dayton area. When he started out around 1968 I believe he worked at the Houndstooth & the Underground. At some point a lounge behind the Dayton Mall next to a bowling alley. Then a little bit tamer atmosphere at the Tender Trap & the Matchmaker. In the 90s it was P&B Muggs (where Lil Abner's had been in Huber).
The couple years I lived in Dayton I worked at Stump's grocery store on Shoup Mill.

My dad was hired to be the first editor of the Kettering-Oakwood Times in 1956. We moved from Cincinnati to Kettering in July of '56. Prior to his work at K-O-T, he was the City Editor Of The Cincinnati Enquirer. Dad was a self-taught "genius" (in the minds of his kids, and his peers), who worked his way up from a newspaper boy on the streets of Cincy, through several editorial depts., to one of the top “rungs on the ladder”. In the early 1950’s, the Taft family in Cincinnati attempted to buy the Enquirer. Dad helped lead a successful attempt by the employees to purchase the newspaper themselves, so as to keep it out of the hands of the very people who owned one of the competitive papers in Cincy.

In 2007, a book was published about those efforts of the employees, and lists my dad (Jack Cronin) as “one of the major players”. Entitled, “The Old Lady Of Vine Street: The Valiant Fight For The Cincinnati Enquirer”, the book actually gave me insight into my dad that I had never been aware of.
Mom was “a homemaker”, a true Saint. She did work for a while in the book department at Rike’s, until suffering a stroke in 1959.

Remember when Monarch was in the east end on Torrence behind my grandmothers house learned to ride my bike there. My dad had a gas station at the linden-huffman point and worked there for years. Hewitt was right across the street and dad bought scrap bags of soap which was a treat for the family as we only had several brands of soap to choose from back in 50s . Moms longest stint working was
at JC Penny at Town and country for over 20 yrs.

Chuck, my youngest son worked at Harris Graphics from 1987. He stayed with them through several name changes and moved with them to New Hampshire when they were known as Heidleburg (sp?) Printing in 2002. They sold out and became Goss something or other. My son came back to Dayton in 2004. He was homesick for Dayton and his family. He worked for a short time at their plant in Sidney. When did your dad work at Harris Graphics?

Luv, wasn't Monarch on Garfield? My grandson owns an old brick home that he is renovating, on East Third Street beside an empty lot that is on the corner of Garfield and Third that I was told is where Monarch used to be.

Wasn't the soap from Hewitt Soap Company wonderful. I used to love walking past there. The entire neighborhood smelled so good. In later years, they made all different brands of soap, even Avon I was told.

My dad was a CPA with offices on the 7th floor of the Reibold Building. His partner had a corner office that overlooked 4th and Main Sts. When I was a kid in the mid-60's, dad would take me to the office on Saturdays to get me out of mom's hair for a few hours. The Reibold Bldg had elevator operators in those days. There was one guy who had kind of a hunchback, sorry to say I can't remember his name. Nice guy. There was one back elevator, off the 4th Street entrance that was operated by an old crusty guy who I was kind of afraid of - I think he didn't like kids very much. I do remember gazing out those corner windows looking down at the big city. One morning there was a parade going by and the lady in the Grand Marshall's convertible saw me looking out the window and waved at me. I thought that was the coolest thing. When I got a little older, dad let me go by myself all the way up to the 11th floor where there was a lunch room with vending machines. It was a real big deal to get a sandwich out of the vending machine, LOL!

Monarch for years was located between Bierce and Fifth St on Torrence. Moved to a new location and still there down on 725. Their old building sat empty for sometime and later became Crowe manufacturing which is no longer in business. Building not in very good shape and empty. Remember my grandmother telling of working at Monarch making ammunition during one of the war. Was the only job she ever had outside her home.

My mother worked at Wright-Patt during World War II, until she married my father in 1950. Then she became a homemaker.

Hi all, as I mentioned earlier in this form My Dad spent 42 years for schriber, harris, whatever you want to call it. Last name Richey, What I can say about the company is, when It Came time for me to get a job I was Halted at the gate. Apparently they didn't want three of use there as my uncle worked there also. That all said dad loved his job until the day he was forced to retire. All my young life we had good fortune so Schribers did him well.
