Not sure if its changed all that much. Worked as a hair dresser there in early 60's and the shop was in the area where the bank if now. It would be interesting to see pictures of many areas of Kettering, Dayton before they became big cities. Even where I lived in Kettering, corner of my street was a grassy lot and its been many things over the years since they had built a small cluster of shops.

Wasn't there a Penny's or Beermans in Airway? That was some time ago (in the 90s I think) A lot of stores have come and gone but not so much in the last
10 years. Sorry, that I have no pictures of it and I'm curious to what WAS there in the 60's. (Blockbuster is now gone, I think.)

I believe there was an Elder Beerman's store on the south side across the road from Airway Shopping Center.

Store that was there was a Pennys. I always hated having to go to a mall and was so glad to have both a Pennys at Airway and a Beermans on Smithville to run into for a quick shopping trip. Seems now that your forced to the Malls but as for me, I started going to Meijers, KMart and Walmart. There still is a Beerman at the shopping center located on Dorothy Lane and Woodman and am hoping it will stay around for awhile longer.

Wish I had some pics of places like Eastown (where the Elder Beerman's was in the 60s and 70s), Airway, Spin-Kemp and Page Manor. These places are touchstones in my childhood and this old brain is getting fuzzy, so pictures would be a real treat!

Airways was L shaped. In the late 60's, I believe there was a Long John Silvers at the entrance from Airways, then on the corner of the mall a tire store then a grocery store then a Rexall Drugs? Back in the corner of the L was a barber shop I went to then all I remember on the leg going toward Woodman was Penneys. There also were a couple of places around on the back of the L but the only one I remember was a pool hall.

@ Paul H the Store across from airway on the southwest corner of woodman and airway was a Millers, building is still there. There was also a grants on the east side of airway where big lots is now. as for eastown the elder beerman was just to the right of the main hallway where some offices and a couple of stores were located, that area had a fire in the 70's and the front facade was redesigned, beermans also had a furniture store on the wing headed out towards linden. Beermans had a huge basement along with to big areas on the ground level, Village thrift now occupies the area with no basement,

@mjr1960. When you said Millers, I had a flash of memory with a perfect picture of that store. At least the Goodyear store is still there. Thats where I bought tires for my Corvette. Wasn't there a hamburger place just east of there on the same side. Scotties? Or something like that.

Paul - same year as me from Beavercreek. Bet we saw each other a lot in there. Light Sky Blue 61 Pontiac built by George Montgomery (66-67) then silver 66 corvette convertible with L88 427 (67-68) then gold 69 vette conv with wild Egyptian paint job and chrome side headers. I moved to FL in Jan 72 with the gold vette.

I started out with a 56 Ford Sunliner. Then a red 63 Ford Galaxy 500 with a bored and stroked 390. Then the Air Force. In 70 to 72, I had a 68 Vette. T-top in British Racing Green with a wicked small block. Had that until I re-enlisted in Aug of 72. In school, before I got my own car, I used to cruise in my Mom's car. A light blue 60 Ford 2 door sedan. At least itveas wheels. I seem to remember a gold 69 Vette. Just sold my last Vette a few months ago. Stock 85. Next car is going to be a 32 Ford Highboy roadster. My retirement toy. In Utah.

Businesses have come and gone but Airway is pretty much the same. Head there often to eat at the China Buffet and shop at Odd Lots. Also a small place called The cakery that has some really good desserts. There is still the Ponderosa and Long Johns, Arbys and Papa Johns Pizza. As for the corner of Woodman and Airway opposite the McDonalds the bar has been torn down and Esther Price had moved to a bigger location way across the parking lot behind where a Blockbuster was. In the past year or so the movie rental place was also closed.Hopefully that area will continue to do well as would hate to see another shopping plaza sit empty and deteriorate.Do miss all the Parkmoors as you could always get a good meal there and find friends to visit with. All of them offered cruise ins where you could show off your vehicles and just enjoy yourselves.

There used to be a bar and pool hall on the back side corner at Airway. Can't remember the names, but I seem to remember that there were fights and stuff like that were in the local news frequently.

I think Esther Price moved just across the parking lot. There's an Auto Zone store down where Penney's used to be. It's next to them on the corner.

There was also an Alber's Supermarket located in the area where Auto Zone is now. I believe the bar that is in question might be the BonFire Lounge. Also, ML Dunn floor covering was located near the old Esther Price location.
I believe the Firestone store is the only original business from when the shopping center opened.

JeffN - Didn't Arby's use a blast of steam on the freshly sliced beef? That seems to be what stuck in my mind.

When I go to Arby's now, the sandwich preparation isn't visible from the counter. All you get to see is the wrapped sandwich sliding down the chute.

There was another roast beef restaurant on the Northwest corner of Woodman and Airway. It was called the 49'er. The building was shaped like an old wagontrain. They must have figured they could compete with Arby's. I never ate there but someone told me the sandwiches were 49 cents. It seems to me that the restaurant lasted maybe 2-3 years. It then became a used car lot and was later demolished.

That was 49er's Roast Beef. From the looks of the place it was a franchise, as opposed to a local "mom & pop" eatery. I remember very well winning free sandwich coupons for 49er's from one of the radio stations in town.

I remember watching them slicing the roast beef, and the blast of steam, too. Those sandwiches somehow tasted fresher and less "fast food" than they do now.

Arby's had great sandwiches until the late 70s or early 80s when they changed everything and I stopped eating there. Roy Rogers Roast Beef was just as good, but I think they disappeared around 1990 or 91. There were several in the Dayton area. Too bad, you just can't get good roast beef like that anymore. At the Airway Shopping Center, there was also a JC Penney's store until like 10-15 years ago. A myriad of places have come and gone, and it's probably only it's location that keeps the entire plaza from sinking.

There are still Roy Rogers in the mid-Atlantic and eastern states. "Roast beef" is no longer in the title, they are now just called "Roy Rogers Restaurants". Burgers and chicken are their big sellers, not even such roast beef is still on the menu.

Roy Rogers had a good roast beef sandwich. About on par with Arby's, or maybe better, was Rax.

Roy Rogers used the ultimate piece of meat for it's roast beef. It is called a skinned inside round. There is no sinew in it. It is rarer and more high priced now. There was a Roy Rogers in Cincinnati for years but they recently changed the name.

The new one is almost finished. I think the classic is to be torn down. The first MacDonalds in the Dayton area was the one one at Wilmington at Dorothy Lane. There is a listing of the order of MacDonalds as they were built in the Dayton area. Look in the site search.

The McDonalds your talking about at Airway was built back in the 90`s im thinking. It was made to resemble the classic design that McDonalds used to be. They were trying out that format as a way to bring nostalgia back to their restaurants. The one that is currently at Wilmington & Dorothy is acually the 3rd one there each being bigger than the previous ones. The company has a deal that they update their buildings every 25 years to keep current with the corporate image. The franchise owner (At Airway) had an opportunity to move across the street and get out of that traffic restricted corner they were in. Its a much better location at Airway shopping Center anyways.

I would guess that the McDonald's Classic has been there for around 15 years. It was just built to look old. The original McDonald's in the Dayton area were at Linden Ave, Wilmington Pike, Germantown Pike, Kettering Blvd, and Free Pike. When I worked there hamburgers were 15 cents, cheeseburgers were 17 cents, French Fries were 12 cents, and milkshakes were 25 cents. This was around 1967.

Funny, I hung out at the Parkmoor at Airway center and all the other cruise in spots from about 1967 to 72 when I moved to FL and I DO NOT remember a McDonalds there. I was part of the hot cars cruising scene and was always anywhere that other car guys went so was this just a drive thru that didn't have parking? Can't believe it was right there and I didn't go to it???

tlturbo. At the intersection, if you turned right going towards Smithville, the was a MacDonalds about a third of the way upmthe hill. There was a Sandy's just past Airway Shopping Center on the right past the Googyear tire store.ast time I cruised that area was summer 72. Went back to the Air Force that August.

I believe that was a Burger Chef, going towards Smithville. McDonalds was on Linden near Spinning.
The McDonalds at Harshman and Airway was built in the late 70s

I was thinking it just had that old look. I knew there wasn't a McDonald's there back in the 70s. The new one looks really nice. Maybe old Airway will get new life. I wish I could say the same for Spin-Kemp...that old place is dead. Very sad.

When did the Post Office move to Airway? I used it when I was in town recently. It seems like it's been there a while.
