Whatever became of Cliff Cab Co ? I remember those old green cabs like yesterday.

Does anybody remember the old bordens dairy building that used to sit at the corner of E 5th Street and Patterson Blvd across from the White tower ?

Are there any White Towers Left ? I sure Miss those Grilled Butter Burgers.

All of the White Towers are gone, although a couple of the buildings have survived.... the one at Third and Patterson is Yummy Burger or White Lotus, and serves Thai food.... the one at Patterson and Fifth is Smokin' BBQ.... there was another one further down on Patterson what became the Breakfast Club (now closed)... but not an original White Tower building.

I've been trying to get photos of every White Tower for years now.... think I have abour five... there were maybe 9 or 10 at the peak.... For that matter, I'm interested in photos of any local diners.... particularly ones that were built in factories and trucked in.... there were Silver Domes in Dayton (the recently closed Dugout Deli was one of those).... Wympee's, Joe & Margaret's Diner, the Gateway diner, Ken's Hamburger Kottage, to name a few...

I suspect that 31 W First is really 319 W First and that 60 S Main is really 601 S Main... so maybe only 8 instead of 9?

White Towers....

200 E Fifth
201 W Third
229 N Main
31 W First
317 E Third
319 W First
327 E Third
60 S Main
601 S Main
9 N Wilkinson

The old White Tower on South Main and Patterson is now back open as the Brunch Club. They serve "Butterburgers" but I've not tried one so I don't know if they're the same.

dquartz: The cabs that I remember are as follows.

Yellow cab. (yellow)

Cliff cab. (dark green with red signs)

Miami/Liberty (black & white)

Checker cab. (off green and white/beige)

West side cab. (Blue) I think.

and there was another west side cab company that you never seen much of in my neck of the woods so I dont remember much about them.

those were the cabs that served the city. there were many other small regional companys on the outskirts. Oakwood, Page Manor, etc.

Yeah... that was Moler's... had a big black and white cow out front.... when I was a kid in the late 50's going out there was like a drive in the country. Building is still there, was a packaging service for a while, and a tropical plant store, think it might still have some kind of packaging business in it today. Think somebody told me that the wrestler, Don Eagle, did some promotional appearances at Moler's.

Thanks for the Moler's memory. I remember it was always a treat to go out for ice cream and seeing that big cow! If I remember correctly, we would always sit outside on some kind of loading dock and eat our ice cream.

rfk61.... Semler's sounds familiar... I try and see what happened to it this afternoon (I'll be in Wilmington).... There's an old ice cream joint (two actually) on the edge of Wilmington on Route 68 just as you hit town coming down from Dayton, but I'm thinking Semler's was somewhere else. I don't think I've been to Lake Cowan more than once in the last forty years.... people who lived in Wilmington didn't go there much in the 60's or 70's.

rfk61.... dad says Semler's is now Gibson's Goodys... but I swear the Gibson sign looks like it's from 1950 and I know Semler's was there sometime between 1960-1970. This is on the left side of 68 just as you enter Wilmington when coming from Dayton.

SteveK/rtk61: I have included a link for you to cut and paste. if you scroll down to the 5th page you will find an article written by Charles E Semler, he talks about graduating from Wilmington High in 1958 and having plans to go back home and take over his fathers Ice Cream Buisness. there is even a photo of the old white Semlers store. when you get to the link you will immediately think you are on the wrong page because the article is contained in a trade journal for the refractories industry which Charles Semler is now a part of. sometimes you can find Dayton History lurking in the strangest places.

Are you thinking of Burger Chef? It was on North Main near Northtown Plaza. It was demolished long ago, maybe around 1985. They had an elaborate neon sign that had a little guy called Jeff ("Burger Chef And Jeff") that looked like his head was a hamburger, running along, seemingly in a big hurry. Becky....do you remember this?

If memory serves Cliff Cab Company was owned by a man named Stayner. I think his son is still alive and owns a Nightclub somewhere in or around Dayton. I was just curious as to whatever became of the Cab buisness, they was a fixture around town for decades.

Found this comment contained in a article published in the year of 2000, looks like Cliff merged with Yellow at some point. if memory serves Miami Liberty and Checker Cab have had the same owner since the mid 60s.

Schultz would not say how many drivers work for his company, but said Miami Liberty has about 21 cars. It expects to buy more in a matter of months.

Miami Liberty and Checker Cab are owned by the same company. Yellow Cab and Cliff are owned by the same company.

riverdale... i found this article on stayner..

Stayner bought the Bimini Bill's building in 1988. He could remember the days in the 1950s when the street bustled with activity. It was an entertainment district, he said, with restaurants and bars gathered around the old train station. His father owned Cliff Cab Company on the same street, and he spent a lot of time in the neighborhood.

He watched the neighborhood begin its decline about a decade after World War II.

"They took the train station out," Stayner said, and the area began to slide. Eventually he said, "It was a bunch of wino bars, prostitutes and flop houses."

Stayner's building, constructed in 1909, clearly showed its age when he bought it.

The roof had caved in, the floors had begun to collapse and water lines no longer extended to the building's aging pipes. Stayner stabilized the building two years later, thinking he would turn it into an antiques store or an office.

Instead, Stayner used the two-story building mainly for storage and for collateral on loans. He owns the Yellow Rose night club in West Carrollton.

Ah, Butterburgers. In 1969 I would leave DP&L at 5, go to the White Tower and get a Butterburger, then go to the Library and study for an hour, then go to Stivers High School for a 7 pm Sinclair College class. The Butterburgers were mashed flat on the grill, had an onion and pickle and a side of fries and cole slaw.

According to Mr. Google, the old White Tower is still standing at the fork on Patterson Blvd. Can someone tell me if it is still a Restaurant of some type?

Also, It looks like the old BHA building is gone? I see the Salvation Army has moved into the old Miami Maid Bread Bakery.

I remember Cliff Cab very well, they were a common sight during my growing-up years and were always lined up at the Greyhound station when I came home on leave from the Air Force.

My folks told me that when Wayne Township incorporated into Huber Heights, the City of Dayton was so miffed at not being able to annex the Township once and for all (Oh, they tried! The potential tax revenue must have made their mouths water!) that the City Council passed an ordinance in the Taxicab Code forbidding Dayton cabs from taking requests for service from or to Huber. I've often wondered if that was fact or misunderstanding.

Well, Finally another person who remembers Cliff Cab. I can't shed much light on the annexation fiasco; it was still just Wayne Township in my Day. It seems as though they could have prevented the Taxi's from answering calls in Huber, but I'm not sure if it would have been legal to pass a law preventing Driver's from taking a paying fare to some particular area of the County. Who knows, we had some real goofs in City Government for a while back then. Thanks for the input.
