i was there in cottage 5 when Penningtons where the cottage parents, i remember a lot of your names, and others like David Moon and Dale Moon, both in #5. this was in early 1960, i was only 5 years old then. my mother was able to take me home for a couple years, i was placed back in Shawen Acres around 1965. cottage #1 mom and pop Edwards were the cottage parents then. i can remember Randell Watkins, Steve, Doug, and Dean Watkins as well as Darell Dickerson, Terry Dudes, Chris Henry, Tony Combs, Victor Parroit. later i was placed in cottage #2, cottage parents where being replaced with group leaders like James More, Rodger Troutman. i also spent time in #11. looking back i remember things like the gate house that seperated the upper grounds from the lower play grounds, the horseshoe pit, the small bridge that led to the baseball diamond, the arts and craft log cabin one of two, the second one behind the swimmingpool was for the boyscouts as i remember?

I was also in cottage #7 with my Sister Karen. My little Brother David as well. I think I was so scared to be there because of all the new faces that I kept to myself. I have been back to Shawen Acres a few times, Now( Haines Childrens Services) since I live in Huber Heights. I don't like being there very long. I feel alot of sadness of others when I am there. I guess it was a place I had to be when I was little, to get where I am now. The Love of my Husband & always holding onto my 3 Sons as tight as I could hold...So many wonderful blessings in my life & tough as steel..

I lived at Shawen Acres for a brief time (early 1970-late 1971). I started in Cottage 2 I believe (Miss Thornton was the cottage mom). Some of the people in the cottage were Steve and Ronnie Vineyard, Frankie and Rodney Brown, Charles Jones and Jasper Moore. I also spent time in Cottage 6 (Curtis Smith was cottage pop). Some of the people were Dennis Brown, Tim Hunt, Wayne Smith, Michael and David Storm, Dale Moon and a guy who was a very good friend to me, Victor Dixon. Sadly Victor died playing basketball I believe. Would anyone know what happened to the picture of him that was inside the main entrance? I hope someone from his family was able to get it before they boarded the place up. The last six months I was there I was in Cottage 12 I think (not sure of the cottage number but Larry Troutman was the cottage pop, what a treat that was). As I said my stay there was brief but I made alot of friends (other residents and some staff members, April Trochelman (a nurse), Byron Lewis and Dave Jennings (activity directors). Anyway I had good times and not so good times while I was there. If any of the people I have mentioned are out there or if anyone knows of them I would really like to hear from you. I don't expect you to remember me (it was a long time ago) but I would like to hear from you none the less. My name is Louis Schaab (I go by Lou now). You can find me on Facebook or reach me at louschaab@hotmail.com. Hope I hear from someone. Have a nice day!

Well, we stopped by Shawen Acres to look around and take a few pictures. What they have done to the place was so disappointing and discouraging that I couldn't. What was once so vibrant and full of life is now dead and sterile. One of the saddest things I've ever seen.

I do remember David Wilkerson, Marion, Jimmy and Danny Joslin as well. I also remember Miss Becker as I helped quite often in operating the switchboard in the evenings and on week ends. She taught me that "use is wear" so don't be needlessly flipping switches or plugging or unplugging things. I also remember the fast and sometimes dangerous sled rides. Wild times for sure.

Thomas can't say I remmeber you by name, would have to see your face . Been such a long time since I've seen a lot of the people that resided at the 'home", as thats what the outsiders would call it. I left the home after high school and joined the A.F. where I did 4 years at Malstrom A.F.B. in Montana. Came back to dayton and married my sweetheart ( also a S.A alumni Beverly Wiley, she was in cottage 7) went to work for G.M., retired in 98. Went back to work in the security field--retired again in 2010. Gary Weaver and I get together for Breakfast every now and then. Isaac Johnson and I were very close friends until he passed a couple of years ago. As for intergration they tried it back in 50 then again in 62 I beleive with Dwight Jackson and David Wilkerson I hear cause it happened a little after I graduated.
Heres my e-mail address, maybe if we see pisc of each other a light bulb will go off.

only thing i was wondering about was who it was.turned out it was Sid Sistrunk,i was so glad we were able to get the pool in time before someone got the good swimtrunks.did you remember him,i know gary weaver should remember me,you know i remember gary as being either hoody or at least what i thought was at least shawen acres hoodie, smoking, cussing, and again what i perceived and what was real,i think he had the hots for rita shoop, her and her tight sweaters

Is there anyone out there that was at Shawen Acres from '70-'71? You would know people like Steve and Ronnie Vineyard, Charles Jones, Jasper Moore, Michael and David Storms, Dale Moon, Dennis Brown, Terry Dews, Cheryl Strawbridge and staff like Byron Lewis, Dave Jennings (I think that was his name) and a nurse named April Trochelman. If you know where any of these people are I would really like to hear from you. Thanks!

while having coffee and reading articles in here i thought of someone important to shawen acres and that was the night guard,mr. puterbaugh, everyone was always watchful while sneaking out and going to the different cottages at night and having to get back before he did bed checks, that was scarry cause getting caught meant mrs.alaman in the morning and for that you may not get your dime allowance for the week

I didn't live at Shawn Acres but did attend Van Cleve Elementary School 1965-69 grades 5-8 with a lot of students from SA. Have been trying for several years to locate GERARD MUNIER who was a student in my classes from SA. Does anyone know anything about him? I'd sure like to find him. I also remember Victor Parrot, I think from the skating rink. Gerard Munier was in at least 7th & 8th grade with me, & in my 8th grade graduation class.
