Although I did not live in Shawn Acres I lived behind it and used to cut thru the fence to get in to play with the kids. I remember one of the staff told me one time you won't like what we are eating we are having spinach and I said I loved spinach. I guess they finally told my mom to not allow me to keep coming over there. This was in the late 40's

Went out to Shawn acres, last week, took some photos. The cottages were really bad off. It you can get down to see them I think you should befor they decide to tear them down. Mike h my brother is bobby miller , he was in cottage six, pop smith. The pool is gone as is the gym and that whole building. The stock room that we got food from is gone. All the cottages are their except for 11and 12 and the hospital and cottage 6 , 7 which is where the new building is. Cottage 8 is used to teach some classes. It is kept up . They will not let you go inside. There is a very big parking lot.everything else is gone. They do still have the front office. But it to is very run down. It was so sad. Hard to think of it being this way. They needed the place. Mike h what cottage were you in , what is your last name? Tracy miller and Curtis miller are my cousins. Do you know a melody cox and her brothers?

On the 30 th of last month the state was to have a meeting to decided if they were going to tear the cottages down, and keep one for a museum. Yes the place has really been done wrong. It is in bad shape. Like a old friend die. It is No way how we all know it was, and how we kept it up. If you can see it now while it is still there, if you can,t get there try to get some photos of it from some one who has them. If your a person who has any photos of the home or the kids, by all means put it here on the web for use all to have. We all need this. I don,t know what they are going to do , but I know the place is needed to day. But others say it is not a need like the home, that today is different . Kids are in foster homes, group homes, but we know how that is. Yet you have kids that are homeless. Family's that are living in homeless shelters , hotels. So you see in my thoughts they are much needed to day. What do you think? Hello mike. Will email you. Barnett I to remember ms Becker . Let's all keep in touch.

Dear fellow Shawn Acres family,

There is a radio producer interested in doing a documentary about the facility and former residents. We've heard that the plan is to demolish the buildings and he would like to meet with a group to visit the site and record some of our memories for a radio project. this could be broadcast on our local public radio station WYSO 91.3 FM. If you are interested or have a story to share, please respond to this post. I being a former resident myself will relish the opportunity and can put you in contact with the group. Please respond within the next few weeks to help us plan a date.

The guy doing the research peice on Shawen Acres will be there at SA tomorrow 9/30/12 at 1:30pm for the writting and filming of the documentary because we think the cottages might not be there much longer. As of today the cottages that will be razed have been gutted of all windows, metal work and plumbing. So the idea is to bring forth as much info while it is fresh in our minds and our hearts. If you can make it please do.All Alumni are invited. That means if you are in touch with a fellow alumni please invite them.

If you are a member of Facebook, in the SEARCH FOR PEOPLE, PLACES and THINGS bar, type in Dayton History Books Online. There are a few pics of the Shawne Acres buidling on this site shortly before it was demolished in 2012. You will have to scroll down thru a lot of pics but they are on there. Mr. James Steeber has a lot of AWESOME pics posted from Dayton's History. Hope this helps.

I UNDERSTAND THAT SHAWN ACRES HAS BE TORN DOWN WHAT A SHAME A LOT OF HISTORY WENT WITH THOSE BUILDINGS MY MOTHER AND HER BROTHER WERE PLACED THERE IN 1941 THERE NAMES ARE LOUISE AND RALPH BOWSER BOTH DECEASED THEY WERE PLACED THERE BECAUSE THEIR FATHER AND MOTHER WERE ARRESTED BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T WANT THE SCHOOL TO VACINATE THEM. THERE WAS MANY HEADLINES BACK THEN IN THE DAYTON PAPER AND MY MOM AND HER BROTHER WERE NOT ALLOWED TO READ THEPAPER OR LISTEN TO THE RADIO. SHE USED TO TELL ME THAT IT WAS OKAY TO LIVE THERE THEY WENT TO SCHOOL AT LOOS AND THEY WERE TREATED WELL . SHE OFTEN WONDERED WHAT HAPPEN TO SOME OF HER COTTAGE FRIENDS SHE DID KEEP UP WITH SOME OF THEM DURING THE EARLY YEARS. A SAD TIME FOR HER BUT SHE NEVER COMPLAINED ABOUT IT. I WAS BORN IN DAYTON AND HAVE BEEN BACK TO DO SOME ANCESTRY AND TOOK MANY PICTURES MY MOM WAS IN BUILDING 9 AND RALPH WAS IN 4. IF AANYONE REMBERS THEM PLEASE WRITE ME AT gkue@embarqmail.com or i will check back here thanks

Hi, my grandparents were Helen and Orville Wharton who worked all their lives at Shawen Acres. Do any of you remember them? I have memories as a young child of random people coming to their house (they had moved to Knecht Dr. when my dad entered high school at Colonel White) and calling them Mom and Pop. While I hope any memories of them that you may have are good, I am open to hearing all types of memories. Thank you in advance!

Hi J Davis. I remember Mrs. Wharton well. She was in charge of the stock room (actually alot bigger then a room) where all the cottages picked up their weekly groceries and where all us kids went to get our clothes, especially at the beginning of school year. She had alot of responsibility and I never heard anyone ever complain. She was a nice lady and good friends with my cottage mom, Mrs. Edwards.

Not near as well because he was maintnance and worked with Pop Nugent and several others (dang, I forget their names) and they did most of their work in places we weren't allowed to go and at times we were either gone or in bed. When I was there, 1959 to 1967 there was the greatest group of people you could imagine overseeing that orphanage. From Mr. and Mrs. Allaman to the playground directors, everyone really cared about the kids.

Mike H Did you know Football staff Don Hawker Don Dixon Larry Shsdowens and there was a girl on staff and I cant remember her name but I thought she was cute. I played there in 58 to 61. If you remember they let guys from the outside play. Hawker became a friend after I graduated. Henry Reynolds & Tracy Miller were a couple of the players I remember. I came from Chaminade and caught a bus there every knight after school and hitched hiked home to Weast Carrollton every knight. I remember practicing at night and they would give us cartons of milk after practice and sometimes we were allowed to swim. One thing I remember was making friends with Oren Fisher who was from Shawen Acres but played for Colonel White. He was way to good to play at The Acres, I know he made All City at fullback I think. Kept up with him for a few years after we graduated but havent heard anything about him for years. "GREAT MEMORIES"

Hi Joey, Yep, Don Hawker was the head of recreation and seemed to be everywhere at once: he could cover some ground. He was also the gym teacher at Fairview Elementary School back then. The other guys you mention were way older then me at that time, so I do not remember them. I remember you now though, you're Hartzell's buddy. (smile)

It was a rough life in Shawen Acres. I had one boy in my grade school that was from shawen Acres and he was a bully. I think he tried to prove himself to everybody else. The family was a failure and he was out on some vendetta with shoulder chip. I just overlooked it. I don't even remember his name. He went to Fairview.

Does anyone remember an elderly, female carer named Ethel Beckey (aka Muv)? She worked & lived at Shawn Acres - Circa late 50's to 60's). She was a large, soft-spoken woman, with short, white hair. She died in an Englewood nursing home on December 29th 1986 at the age of 100 years & 6 months. She was an accomplished seamstress, so, in her spare time she often did clothing repair & knitted/crocheted/sewed items for the children at the orphanage. She had 6 children of her own (plus umpteen grandkids) so was an excellent mother figure. Any info (anecdotal stories) would be welcome!

Yeah I remember Shawn Acres as a kid. My parents told me about it and then later on I walked by it everyday to school at Charles Loos (67-68). I only knew one fella who lived there - he was a black kid named Charlie. I don't know his last name but sure would be cool if I knew how he turned out 50 years later. Better than myself hopefully.

Jamie13 I'm not sure if it was your grandmother but I played on SA's football team from 59 to 61. I cant remember the year but we were playing Lincoln Heights at home and I got me bell rung pretty good. Coach Hawker sent me to the infirmary to get checked out and there was an elderly nurse who checked me out then asked me a few questions and asked if I felt OK obviously I said yes, went back for the last half and finished the game. She was a very nice lady. GREAT MEMORIES

Hi everyone...my name is Linda and I love this site (DHBO)....my husband works for Montgomery County Parks. I have notice on this site that some people were talking about the buildings being torn. I am agreat believer in keeping history alive !!! I hated it when they tore the buldings down, it was very sad. But please everyone that can should go and see the grounds now...they have done a wonderful job to make it a beautiful park. They used the beams and tiled roofs from the old buildings and other salvage...it really is nice. If they had to tear it down, then I am glad it looks the way it does now. I did not live there but I do have a great sense of preservation awareness. I am sure the people who lived and grew up there has felt a loss of identity ( I know I drive by the house I was raised in and cry because it is delapidated), so please check it out....many memories I'm sure !!!

Drove by that part of town and was bowled over when seeing there was no Shawn Acres and wondered where the children were being placed now. Needless to say I noticed the new facility further back and it looks like state of the art. Old buildings seemed to have old time charm that the newer doesn't have but the kids and workers I am sure love the current enviornment. Also glad to hear many who lived there have happy memories as when I was young the threats many times from parents were to be sent there if we didn't behave which scared the daylight's out of us because we didn't know any better. There also was a st. Joseph children's home and may have been Catholic run. Does that place still exist?

I remember when I was on my way to Forrest Park, I used to see a couple of the older kids on the trolley heading back to the acres. I used to hear such horror stories about what punks these kids would be when they were out on their own and I finally got to where I would have arguments with people for saying that because it just wasn't true. Kids will be kids, so I am sure there were some rowdy ones, but the ones I talked to were just normal acting kids like anyone else I ever I met. I made friends with one Black Kid who wore glasses and we used to meet at the old YMCA and play ping Pong. Neither one of us ever mentioned that he lived at Shawn Acres because he seemed to want to escape that identify for a while. I never asked about his parents and he never offered, anyhow they must have had ping pong tables at Shawn Acres because he always skunked me. St. Josephs sounds awfully familiar, but for some reason I am drawing a blank on it. I know the old St. Josephs church was down on Second Street by Delco, but that's not the same thing. I may start a new thread and see what all memories people have of the place. Thank you for bringing that up.

Riverdale Rat, St. Joseph's Orphanage was on St Paul Ave, between Demphle on the south side and an alley just north of Andrew St. and the eastern side was on St. Joseph Ave.

Billd1952...Yes, I remembered it as soon as someone mentioned St Paul Ave. I was never on the grounds, but I was casually acquainted with an old guy who used to be a night watchman there. I started a thread for it in hope that we would get some good stories from folks who used to work, live there. Thanks for the exact location and all of the street names, I am going to take a Google trip over there right now and see if I can conjure up any more old memories, but I doubt it. I seem to recall it as a big old hulking structure that could sometimes be seen from the Wyoming street hill.

This isnt fact based but believe back that far foster parenting wasn't as available if at all and the orphanage was a temporary fix until a family could get themselves together. Could have hit hard times and rather than children suffering they at least had a roof over their head and food in their tummys. Don't think a lot of times it had anything to do with bad parenting.
