I was there in 1955 through 1958-59 I am not good at dates & times, never was.lol I remember Cottage #2 Mr. & Mrs. Bowling were the House parents. We had to darn our own socks using a lightbulb. Do all kind of chores.I remember Mr. Wharton in the Gym calling out the school buses and sitting up in the office by the switchboard counting tax stamps and putting them in stacks then wrapping a rubber band around each stack. The football team, snack shack, craft cabin, barber shop, big laundry, so many things, my goodness. I forget a lot and would like some answers but that has put a burden on me I didn't want. Anyway Hi everyone! I hope I can add a litte here to help or just a laugh or cry or just remember. :)

I attended Shiloh Elementary School (K-3) during the late 1950s. I remember a few of the kids there who lived at Shawn Acres including "Enoch" (a chubby white kid) and "Shirley" (a small black girl). I always felt so sorry for those kids, so it's nice to hear that there were good times, too.

lived at SA in the 60's with my brother Russell Barnett. My older sister was there for a short time until she when to live with her grandmother. Her name was Betty Blackford. I had a younger brother and sister that went to a foster home. I was there until I was 9 yrs old. I lived in cottage #3 with Mom and Pop Terry, I remember Phil Bonner a cool black kid who taught me how to swim, I Remember a Muscle bound teen named Ricardo who was a great kid who didn't let anyone pick on his little pals. I remember the ground and a Civl War Mounument, The football fields, The Two Log cabins that we had boy scout and cub scout meetings in, The big Gym were on week ends you watch the big window to see if your parents came to vist and listen for your name to be called. I remember the model train room up stairs above the weight room. I remember going to the stock room below the office to get issued your new clothes and shoes for the new school year. In the winter I would get a form of psoriasis so bad that I had to spend the night in the little hospital they had on the campus. The nurse's there were so kind to me. I also remember the Christmas Plays on the stage in the gym, Going to the movie in a room below #11 and#12, I think they had pop corn sometimes. I also like the woodshop they had and got to work with some tools that would give people of this day nightmares LOL if they saw a kid under 9 yrs old using. My first girl friend Candy Barnet, No relation, she was same age as me but was taller than me. My buddy would tease me about needing a ladder to kiss her good night. lol. Terry Cowuch? Who had ran away along with my brother Rusty, broke into a house stole thousand of dollars and couple guns and some bikes I think it was a cops house? They ran around N Main st area for about a week before they were caught sleeping in restroom at a gas station. They hide most of the money under a rock under or near the Siebenthaler bridge but couldn't find it again because they hide it at night, Man did they get in trouble for that. I remember sleighing on the hill in front of the girls cottages. That was huge to a little kid,. Had a buddy named Blankenship who could fly down it. I also remember Lowes Elementary school and walking home to SA pass the funeral home. We would swipe pop bottle from the pop machine outside Lackeys? furiture store and cash them in for some penny candy at a little store at Main and Siebenthaler. Every Oct. I remember the little bakery on the north edge of SA had a display window that had all kinds of spooky cakes and pastery and a witch on a broom stick flying back and forth for Holloween over spooky houses. At Christmas Santa and Reindeer It was almost as good as Elder Beermans Christmas window. We were never trying to beg but every now and then some one would come out and see us kids and go back in and come out with a box of cookie or cupcakes for us poor orphan's the owner never ran us off because he would make a extra sell . LOL Hollween we were turned loose on the neighborhood bigest candy haul of the year So many memories, Well my mother got her self together and was married to a guy that was a big jock in the Dayton area, so mom had us join the football team and she brought he to watch the games. Next thing we knew we were going home to our new Dads and Moms house. There was other person who I wish I knew what happen to, While in SA I was playing in the rafters of shelter at the horse shoe pits. I fell and landed on brick barbacue and broke my arm in three places, it was so bad that I was taken to Miami Valley Hospital and had to stay for weeks, A Nurse there named Mrs Melnick? Took care of me an I think she wanted to adopt me. She came to see Rusty and Me every now and then and made sure we were doing ok. I 'm sad I never got to tell her thank you. Well if you want to contact me my Email is Rbarn11560@aol.com

RichardBarn#3 If you played in the 60's did you remember Henry Reynolds, and I think Tracy Jones. I played there in 59, 60, & 61. I lived on the outside but at t6hat time they let boys from the outside play. Don Dixon was coach my first year and then Don Hawker came in. I remained to be friends with Hawk for years after. I usedto get out of Chaminade at 2:30 and catch a bus to practice and because I got their early I got to eat dinner there. I also remember Larry Shadowens who was a coach too. And who was the young lady in the athletic dept. I cant remember her name. "GREAT MEMORIES"

I am so excited to come across these posts! This brings back so many memories! I was looking for some information about a TV show that came on in the 1960's that featured teenagers dancing, and it was because of one of the many benevolent trips that were given to the kids of Shawen Acres that I was even on it. I think it was Disco 2 or something like that. I too spent some time at the "Rock" as we used to call it. I was there from 1960-1963, and spent the 4th and 5th grade at Shiloh Elementary School. I was in Cottage 10. The first Black girl in that cottage with Mom Matthews, who was from W. Virginia, so you know that was a hoot. I went to foster care, and became a resident again in 1966 when the foster parents divorced, and was there until 1969. I went to Cottage 7 this time, which was where most of the Black girls were. There were Black Cottage Mom's there who could do our hair, so that worked out better for me. Mom Beatty, Mom Bell, and Mom Bush didn't play either, they kept us in order. Some of you may remember me - I have always been taller than everybody, was a bit mischievous, and liked to have fun. I had a horrible nickname "Yankles" because I had big legs and ankles on a skinny body. I was also called "Space Ghost" because I wore blue glasses that showed white on photographs. I was one of the first black students to attend Meadowdale HS from Shawen Acres that was in regular grade and not Special Education. We didn't have the problem with race on the inside that was going on in the community outside of our safe haven. Black and White kids lived together and if there was a problem with race, I was not aware of it. I remember a white boy and black girl that were boyfriend and girlfriend for a long time, and we didn't think anything about it. I remember their names too, just like I remember a lot of names. Diane Christopher, I read your post from 2010 and I can put you in touch with Telitha. I was sorry to hear about Debby passing, because she was one of my best friends. I was there when Mark Moorhead did the suicide dive on the trampoline and broke his neck, he died a couple of days later. I remember David Abney, Michael McNutt, James Gamble, the Parrot boys, Liz & Larry Shadowens, Pop Edwards (remember he had that stiff leg and walked liked Chester on Gunsmoke?)Beverly Cox, Bertha Ivory, Susie Cooper, the Brown sisters, Davareen Moon and her brothers, Sid Sistrunk, Emmabell and Gabrelle Butler, Minor Martin & his sisters, the Bonner kids, all the boys in Cottage 6 because that was where the Black boys were. If I keep naming who all I remember, I will use up all of my allotted characters! I remember the movies in the Scout Room on Friday nights. I remember waiting in anticipation to turn 13 so I could participate in the 13 & up activities, because they always got to do interesting stuff like go downtown to the movies. Remember the laundry, where if you got in trouble you had to work in there for punishment instead of enjoying privileges? I iron everything today because of that laundry! I have good memories of Shawen Acres. Life there was better than a lot of kids have it today. A lot of you have expressed an interest in having a reunion for those of us that are still around. I just happen to be an event planner, so if there is enough interest, that may be something that is doable...maybe next year? I'll be checking with this forum to see the response or you can email me if like at sacalloway@sacalloway.net. May God continue to Bless You in Life!

I was born in February 1959 and was adopted thru Shawen Acres between February and September 1959. I am trying to get information on my birth parents and their medical history . Can anyone give a direction to go ? My adopted parents are wonderful people but they tell me they don't know the answers to my questions.

Sharon C>: When asked if she knew you, Debbie Abney said:
----------yep, Sharon Calwin, or Calvin. She and I were in cottage 10 together, she had really big eyes, and one night when we were at the cemetery running she fell into a fresh grave, I'll never forget her eyes, they were huge from fright. She was a lot of fun, we got along great.

OMG Mike, Debby is so right! LOL!!! I remember that night! It was like around Halloween and I was terrified! I started crying and probably even peed on myself a little bit. But I wonder if she remembers the night they were having a seance and I hid under the bed and knocked when they asked for a signal that their loved one was present, and then let out a blood-curling scream and scared the mess out of everybody and everybody started running out of the room like crazy... hahaha, I get so tickled thinking about that...
